Best desktop replacement for £700?

I am looking to get a new laptop. I don't currently do any gaming but would be interested in playing Shogun 2 etc.

I use my laptop largely for downloading, browsing, e-mails etc and it is generally left on all of the time.

I have been looking at the Dell XPS's. Wondering if anyobdy has alternative recommendendations for up to £700.

Ram: Minimum of 6GB

Processor: Minimum of Intel Core i5, would prefer 2nd gen

Screen: Would prefer 17" as opposed to 15", portability is not a massive issue. Don't watch a great deal of media on the laptop but would like a decent screen.

Storage: SSD would be massive bonus as I don't need masses of storage. Have 1TB of external storage available

These two caught my eye. Which is the best deal and would the first option be capable of playing most games with reasonable graphics settings?

First option for £701.70 including delivery: Dell XPS 17 •2nd generation Intel® Coreâ„¢ i5-2430M processor 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.00 GHz •English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT) •17.3 FHD WLED AG (1920x1080) with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera •6GB1 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz •750GB2 SATA hard drive (7200RPM) •DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write) •1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M Graphics Card •Backlit UK keyboard •Standard Service - 1 year of Collect & Return 10 day coverage included with your PC •7.57 lbs

Second option for £822.83 including delivery: Dell XPS 17 •2nd generation Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-2670QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz •English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT) •17.3 FHD WLED AG (1920x1080) with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera •6GB1 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz •1000GB2 SATA hard drive (7200RPM) •DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write) •3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M Graphics Card •Backlit UK keyboard •Standard Service - 1 year of Collect & Return 10 day coverage included with your PC •7.57 lbs

Any alternatives with links appreciated.

First option is the better deal.

The second one is a little bit faster, but not £100 faster. The only difference between them is that the second one has a hyperthreaded cpu, (which would hardly make any difference in games) and a very slightly better graphics card.

I tend to think oppositely. An extra £100 for the bump to the i7 and a slightly better graphics card, as well as more HDD space is pretty nice. Not the most perfect price mind you, but it depends how long you want this laptop to last as well. I personally would go for the second choice, or even keep looking around.

The last laptop I bought was £490 and it's lasted me over 4 years. I can trade it in for £80 against the XPS 17.

Check out Dell Outlet http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet. I got an XPS l502 with i7 2630QM, 8GB Ram, GeForce GT 540M for £615 inc delivery.

You either get refurbished, or customer returned items. Some have some faults, mostly small scratches and someone returned it to Dell. If you report a fault to Dell they will send a tech to your home to repair/replace any faults you find. Mine was ok.

Only annoying bit is...The outlet site updates sporadically. Some days there will be huge amounts of stock and then for a few weeks there will be absolutely nothing. There are l702 XPS i7 or i5's with 6gb ram usually for about £450 upwards (plus VAT if in uk, and delivery).

I kept checking the outlet site for about a month until I found what I was looking for and I am happy I did!

Apparently they add stock to the uk site about 1pm onwards. But I found it to be very random

Thanks for the reply. Have been watching the Dell Outlet for some time but have found it very frustrating in the way you have mentioned.

With the current discount codes and a bit of haggling I've just ordered the below system for £545.20 including trading in my Inspiron. Paid extra for the screen and backlit keyboard.

Second option is much better and well worth the price increase.
