Clockspeed and architecture have even less significance when you're considering a very, very specifically written OS/application for a very, very specific hardware platform.
Indeed, this is the reason why consoles are able to run so much faster when using similar hardware (e.g. a PC with a 7800GTX is nowhere near as fast as a PS3 when running the same game). Fixed hardware is good for some things, but bad if you like variety, customization, and openness.

Those are locked since they do not pass their benchmarks for a good core or sector, so no they are not the same thing. They withheld software saying that it was unable to run on the older hardware when, clearly, it is able to run just fine.

The only thing separating the 4 from the 4s is siri. Without it no one in their right mind, even most apple fanboys and girls, would have made a move tot he 4s. With the lack of LTE or any other real changes, yes they added a dual core but it really doesn't add to the phone. I say this, because my sister has an iphone 4 and I have yet to see that it has a problem running anything. Now, in the future, yes it will help, but by then the 5 will be out with LTE (hopefully).

TLDR: nto a good comparison. Siri is the only selling point. No LTE

Do you really think the only reason why there are X2's and X3's is because every X4 has one or two bad cores? You don't think that perhaps perfectly fine X3's and X4's have one or two cores disabled because more X2's are needed to fill out that segment of the market? Of course--hence why many people have successfully unlocked (and even overclocked) X2's and X3's.

It's no different, only that this is apple, and people love to jump on the "let's criticize apple" bandwagon.

No one goes, "ZOMG, AMD locks 50% of its cores to force consumers to buy their higher-end quads!!!"

Wow, so what about new optics and new 8MP CMOS sensor? Dual Core processor with faster speed, new GPU and dual band GSM/CDMA.

As far as firmware flashes and unlocking shaders, I have done this more than once with great results and no issues. AMD and nVidia lock cards down to make profit. The chips cost the same it has nothing to do with the way they perform...

How is this even a story? OS and program features are almost never hardware limited.

For example, Windows Pro is more expensive because it has a virtual desktop + a few other business oriented features. These features were in the original design roadmaps, they just cut some of them out for the lower versions.

ALL software operates this way, and Apple in most cases doesn't differentiate between hardware and software. They don't sell hardware at commodity prices, because they lock the software and hardware together. That's their business model, and everyone who knows anything about Apple understands this.

This is the strength of having vertical integration. It takes massive amounts of vision and more importantly, resources, to pull it off (Apple bought Intrinsity for the A4 for 121m for example), but it means you can bundle the product as a complete package and profit more.

As a side note, HP/WebOS is an example of how not to do it. You have to be in the game for the long haul, and you have to use your heightened control over the design process to either bring extra value or new features for the consumer (neither of which HP chose to do).

No offence but that's possibly the worst comparison you could make...
X2's and X3's cost less than the X4's. AMD wouldn't say: 'Hey, here's an X3' (at the price of an X4) and then the next day: 'But here's the X4, buy this because your X3 is rubbish and can't run XXXX'

-- Small rant after this line --
Just pointing out a flaw, I honestly don't care about all these smartphones. Sometimes when I go to the pub with some mates we see youngsters sitting there with their smartphones next to eachother doing whatever, probably facebook (sure beat WoW as the biggest MMORPG) because it's cool and 'social'.

I'll admit, sometimes I could use one, to quickly check my emails or do a quick google. But I somehow managed to survive without

No, I'm not poor, I use a Sony Ericson K770 because it works and it's brown.
