Radeon 6970 or GTX 580

Thread Starter
Need to upgrade the GPU and was just wondering between these two:
ASUS/Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 and Gainward GeForce GTX 580.

I know there are other brands for same reference board but I can get a good deal on the three above.

I would need the one with the best framerates at 1900x1200.

The 580 exceeds the 6970 in most every bench mark but not by much and the 580 is a ggod bit more expensive

I am not familiar with Gainward 580s; but if it's reference, stick with the GTX 580.

6970s are good cards but more comparable to a GTX 570. A non-reference 580 would have to have horrible cooling to be brought down to that level.

Once the 600 series comes out getting a second 580 will be easy .

Hello,

Why not go for 2x 560 ti, 2x 6870 or 2x 6950?

The price will be more or less the same with 40-50% more performance.

I have just been in a similar situation as you, having to choose whether to buy 1 580 now and then add another one later on, or 2x 560 ti for the price of one 580. The 580-route was tempting, particularly with the prospect of 580 prices dropping with the release of Kepler Q1 2012. Yet by then a 580 will no longer be a high-end card and bying one might not seem like a good idea. So I ended up choosing 2x 560 ti.

BTW 580's in SLI would require a larger power supply than the one you currently have, which is something I think you should consider aswell.

My vote goes for 580, NVidia, the way it's meant to be played! But seriously, a lot of games are optimized for NVidia.

Yes I am buying a 850w Corsair Professional AX850 along anyway so that should be fine for the likes of 2 x 6950s right?
How about power consumption will it go through the roof with 2 cards? And would idle noise be pretty loud?

Yes but my current PSU causes random reboots when gaming so its pretty much dead and needs to be changed.
Just concerned about fan noise of 2 x 6950 when idle
