Radeon 6970 or GTX 580 - Page 2

How about power consumption will it go through the roof with 2 cards? And would idle noise be pretty loud?
First off, I'm no expert on power supply's yet when I asked on this forum if my 850W power supply would be able to manage sli 580's, the answer was yes but without overclocking.

A very nice - and very expensive - power supply you have chosen for yourself there. Why not go for a TX/HX 1050W instead. I'm not too sure about the TDP of 6950's in CFX - I think a 750W would do it, but I don't know.

If you don't like noise, then you should probably go with ASUS or MSI.

I would need the one with the best framerates at 1900x1200.
GTX 580 for best performance.

AMD 6970 is a great card, less expensive a tad less performance. Sometimes it's on par with the 570 and occasionally comes close to a 580. It's more of a between card.

Up to you if the extra money is worth or not. The extra VRAM is not even an issues. It's already been proven that there is only a 1 FPS difference between 1.5GB vs 3.0GB VRAM on a single 1920x1200 resolution monitor.

Yes your 850 Watt PSU can handle GTX 580's in SLI as well.

Good luck on your choice. Update post after you pull the trigger.

In real-life gaming the 6970 and 580 are on par with latest drivers. Sometimes the 580 is faster, sometimes the 6970 is faster. Depends on the games you want to play.

If you play ''benchmarks'', then Nvidia are using all sort of tricks to win those. then the 580 is a better choice. But not alot of games are based on the Uniengine and 3D Mark 11 engine.

So if you're a gamer, buy a 6970 and forget it. And buy something else you need for your computer with the difference in price.

Would the extra Vram on the 6970 make a difference on higher res like 1080p compared to the 1.3Gb of ram on the GTX570??

Answer is clearly seen GTX580.
1st because he had more horse power.
2nd he is the world fastest single card.
3rd he had physx + 32X AA.

580 for single card but 2 x 6950s would give much better performance than 1 GTX 580 right?
I have read a lot of reviews and it seems like the 580 has better frame rates but still seem to suck at 1900x1200 and with decent settings, for a €500+ card and less than 60fps at 1900x1200 is a bit shocking.
The single 6970 is the same. But Dual 6950s seem to fair a lot better.
Last thing I want is to pay €500+ and put settings on lower/lower the resolution to get no lag.

2 hd 6950 is nearly like one hd 6990. If you unlock both hd 6950s into hd 6970 then you are good to go. If you want to unlock, buy the Sapphire HD 6950 2GB Toxic edition. Flip the switch and you have a HD 6970.

In a word yes. Especially at higher resolutions in newer games.

I am agreeing with a lot of people here.. you could get 2 6950s for near the price of a 580 for a lot more performance. The Toxic 6950s are a good choice if you unlock them youve got a 6990 in your system for about 2/3 the price.
