Radeon 6970 or GTX 580 - Page 3

If money is of little concern get a 580. I too could have gone with AMD 6970 but I for some reason only like reference, seems like they have less problems and vent most if not all heat out the back of the case which is a plus, and the choice more or less came down to the horsepower Nvidia offered compared to the 6970 and most importantly the noise savings.

Comparing the fan noise on a 6970 to that of a 580 is an immense difference. Maybe it was the recordings or whatever. I had a 6870 previously and even at 60% that card eclipsed my 570 and even my 580s when at the same relative fan speed.

Also as to the power supply issue. You can do SLI with 580s at pretty high clocks (relatively) on a HX-850 such as I do. These cards have benched successfully at 935MHz with the CPU at 4.8GHz and the PSU never broke a sweat (that would be bad since water + power = nono).

If money is of no concern and you want the single most powerful GPU for 1080P you needn't look any further than the GTX 580.

Yes I would get a 580 but being put off by the sub 60fps in some games at 1900x1200 (Crysis/Metro 2033 and other similar "benchmark games" excluded)
Would go for 2 x 6950s for better fps but must be way louder.
Hmmm in a pickle.
Can better/less noisy fans be put on the 6950s?

Or just wait for the 28 nm GPUs. Your current GPU isn't that bad. The 28nm will come at about either Q1 2012 or Q2 2012.

Thats what I would do, pair that with Ivy Bridge and your set to go

after looking into what card to get for some time, I settled for CrossFireing 2 Sapphire Toxic 6950's. They have a second BIO's already loaded that unlocks shaders and OC's the card to the point its faster than most 6970's. And its cheaper than the Nvidia 580 in SLI

If you wait for new chipset to come out then as soon as it does its already obsolete and you want the next one.
I just went for the KFA2 GeForce® GTX 580, not as loud as 2 x 6950s and hopefully it will be fine at 1900x1200

A very nice - and very expensive - power supply you have chosen for yourself there. Why not go for a TX/HX 1050W instead. I'm not too sure about the TDP of 6950's in CFX - I think a 750W would do it, but I don't know.

If you don't like noise, then you should probably go with ASUS or MSI.

Are you sure?
AX850 is more than enough for OC'd 580's in SLI. I've run everything from 580 Matrix SLI @1050mhz to a GTX 590 which is even more power hungry, and tri-sli 570's OC'd to 900mhz on the 850w and it never had the slightest hiccup. A quality 750w will do it as well, 580's only draw around 240w at full load. That link you showed of the guru3D site is a wall reading for the full system, you need to take into account the efficiency of the PSU. Stats like that are almost always inaccurate. People manage to run 580 SLI on 600-650w supplies with nary a problem.

As far as 6970 vs 580, I would say its close enough to choose the best price and brand for warranty in your area, unless you have a strong loyalty to one company or another.
