Why do i need surround headset? - Page 2

I know the audiophiles around here are against it but,

I just purchased the g930s around 2 weeks ago.
I love them, You have the stereo to surround switch and Gkeys to change almost anything you want.

The wireless works great, and when you are in a game you can hear everything everywhere.

It is soo nice not having to constantly untangle cords, or have a cord hanging down the side of you. plus if you get up no need to take the headset off.

WoW I just read over my last sentence and I feel very very lazy.

3d spatial panning and surround sound is produced by our ears in two ways:
through binaural transformations(time/phase difference between ears), and monaural transformations (tonal/timbral changes). Both of these can be simulated in software quite accurately, so a good pair of stereo headphones and some virtualization procesing are the best sounding thing you will get.

There are definitely sound cards that can do the processing you are talking about, just see any Cmedia based sound card that has Dolby headphone (CMI8788 being the top chipset). Dolby headphone is full virtualized surround sound downmixing for headphones. It works fairly well, and it blows the pants off the CMSS downmixing in a Creative Xmod, although it doesn't even come close to WaveArts Panorama 5's binaural processing, but you wont get that in a sound card. The other thing to look at are SRS sound labs spatialization technologies. I am certain there are soundcards/headphones that use their technologies to get virtual surround from discreet surround sound inputs.

In the end no matter what the solution you're actually just simulating surround at least at the software level. When I looked for a set of cans, I decided to go with something that was going to give me quality sound verses headphones of maybe inferior but multiple drivers to simulate surround. I personally am very happy with my choice.
Many games today supports real surround sound and the reason to why i want expensive surround headset. Again just with 2 drivers but with that thingy dongle they come with that converts the sound to the 2 drivers. I tried one of dolby digitals demo's on how they make surround for a stereo headset and it sounds amazing. I took a look at Steelseries 7H but meeeh they might be too flimsy tho they got good reviews.

Im thinking after this good read that a good soundcard would be the way to go. This way im not confined to use a certain pair of headset to get simulated surround. I mean i can get a very good soundcard that can simulate surround that you talk about and then im free to buy any good set of normal cans?
If so what soundcard can you recommend? I looked at some of the expensive Asus cards but not sure.

I personally have only heard cmss-3d and dolby headphone, so I can't vouch for other sound cards that posses competing technologies.

Basically any CMedia cmi8788 based sound card will have Dolby headphone(and Dolby virtual speaker). Sounds cards based on this chip include the: Auzentech Meridian 2g, all HTOmega Claro series(afaik), and some of the Asus cards. There are cheaper cards that feature Dolby headphone than listed, but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head without looking it up.

Yeah i have been looking into better soundcards these last few days instead of a headset. My favorite card so far for the price is the Asus xonar d2x. This card has a very nice chip that can do all the surround simulation i can dream of and probably way better than those included dongles that comes with surround headsets.
Only problem now is i still would prefer a wireless set WITH microphone and i cant find a decent set in the pricerange im looking for. Only headsets i can find are the razer chimaera, turtle beach PX5 or soundblaster tactic3d. And i have no idea how they perform compared to the "good" brands like beyerdynamics and sennheiser.

Edit.: Maybe the wireless technology isnt where it should be yet and reason enough to stay wired? thoughts on that?

the xonar d2x should be just what you are looking for, it has a rebranded cmi8788 chip on it.

As for your headset conundrum, you probably are stuck there if you want a wireless headset from a trusted audio brand that isn't insanely pricey.

Turtle beach px5: the THD is listed as less than 1 percent for the headphone amp, which is a bit much. sound quality wise these headphones are probably not too great, as you are paying big bucks for all the Dolby processing and bluetooth stuff that you wont use.

soundblaster tactic3d: not wireless, but will probably do what you want at a sub-100 dollar price range. They probably don't sound much better.

Razer chimaera: I find it funny that all three of these have strangely similar speaker specifications: 50mm neodymium drivers, 20-20k response, about 102db/v sensitivity... makes me wonder if they really are that different.

Your best bet is to not go wireless, and then your options are vastly improved.

I bought one of these 5.1 headsets, the Turtle Beach HPA2, and I must confess it is garbage. I would avoid 5.1 headsets, stereo imaging should be more than sufficient and in many cases probably better overall.

You will be better served by getting a better quality stereo headset or headphones with a separate mic. I use my webcam's mic with my regular headphones.
