HP = Fail. ARM cannot compete in regards to performance or efficiency of the 22nm Intel chips can they? This seems to be a potential major blunder by HP, especially as they are a serious player in the server market. I'll need to read more, didn't realize that ARM server chips were being used in the mainstream server market. But I can't see this going well for HP. I guess that's why I don't work for them and make the millions they make... :-/

Fascinating. I didn't realize ARM had progressed this far, but this is probably what I personally found most interesting:

That IO is going to be a problem. The necessary interconnects for so many low performance chips will also affect costs. I don't see ARM in servers until A15, Denver, or some other chip designed with the HPC/server market in mind.

ARM use a Totally different architecture and instruction set. They arent CISC based like AMD, Intel and NVIDIA CPUs. If they do it right we could well see them competing with our current gaming CPUs pretty soon.

AMD and Intel use a CISC architecture with a RISC decoder. Nvidia CPU designs are all ARM.

Increasing performance to the extent needed would take years of design (a complete redesign is necessary) and working around existing patents (from HPC chip designers like AMD, Intel, IBM, Oracle, etc) would take even more time. The likelihood is that the first "HPC" chips will be like the chips used in that new Chinese supercomputer; they will be good at multithreaded problems, but won't have good performance on a per-core performance.
