The 4000 Dollar PC with Ivy bridge, need opinions.

Thread Starter
I have recently migrated to Australia and had to sell my poor desktop in the Netherlands .

So, I have been saving up since and in Februari/March next year I will have about 4000$ to make a decent gaming/benchmarking rig.

I have been following the progress on the Ivy Bridge release, and they say it will be end of this year/begin of 2012. And around that time ATI is releasing their new HD 7XXX series as well?

Planned Setup:

Case: Around 175-200$
CPU: 2nd best Ivy bridge (570-615$?) (EDIT, the E series, 8 core?)
GPU: New top model Radeon HD 7970 with 2048 shader cores (2X)
RAM: 16 GB Geil DDR3 1333/1600 Mhz
HDD: 3TB linked with a Rocket 6GB/S RAID 620 controller (2X)
30/60GB SSD for OS

MOB: Around 180-225$
PSU: Trupower 1200W
CPU Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H100
SCREEN: 27" Samsung LED

All together I'm on around 3500, so I will have some room for adjustments, like modding, cooling liquid
What do you think of this build? Is there something in there you don't like or should not be in? Please share!

Thanks for reading and maybe replying.

PSU seems a bit too much for what you're using in the system. I'd go for a quality 850w

whats a store in AUS? I suppose I should look at pccasegear I think, unless there is a better one.

I don't believe the mainstream IVY's will cost more than their Sandy counterparts btw.

Right of the bat I can say you should change the screen to an IPS panel, and decrease the ram to 8gb.

Have you considered doing a custom water cooling loop with the extra 500 (600 sans H100). I think the overall benefit will be better in the long run for benching and you can include your GPU (you'll be wanting to OC that with the new shaders to really show its gain) in the loop?

Triple SLI GTX 590. and EVGA SR-2 w/ 2x Xeon W5580. Pretty confident Ivy isn't going to beat that.

you're doing it wrong, ivy bridge is no were near going to cost $600 for the 2nd best processor. You are thinking of ivy bridge E. regular Ivy will cost similarly so current sandy bridge prices.

also, I would go full water loop over the H100, or just get a killer air cooler.

Hm, I have not any knowledge on the power consumption on Quadfire 79xx's. But the Quad sli GTX590 and the Quadfire 6990's pull well over 800-900W?

I hope the TDP of the 79xx series will be lower since they are made on 28NM.

Ah, yeah I have not looked at a proper roadmap yet. But I am after the 8 core version of Ivy bridge, that will be the E series?

I have been thinking of a full loop, I will have a reconsider!

Haha, thats quite neat. But we are looking at 1900-2200 dollar just for the GPU"s there. I don't need a timemachine but a PC.
