[bf3blog] Battlefield 3 on Steam, according to new evidence - Page 14

What's the big deal with Origin anyways?

"Oh it's another program I have to have running under my games." So? With multi core processors this shouldn't make a huge difference. I run steam + origin + battlefield with 4x MSAA + High FXAA and all high/ultra settings, minimum frames of 29 on most maps, caspian brings me down to 22-26 ish area for the minimum frames. (Sig-rig btw)

"It can scan my computer for personal information." I don't know about you guys but I don't keep any personal info on my computer anyways. Copy any data you need to a new hard drive or transfer it onto another computer through windows 7 homegroup. Problem solved.

"The user interface looks like crap and its irritating." You look at it for 5 seconds to click Battlefield 3 and click launch. Get over it.

"I hate Origin anyway and feel like crying about it." Now with the level of intellect here at OCN, there is a small chance this is anyone's reason, and if it was, most likely no one would say so anyway. But if this applies to you, Battlefield 3 is worth the physical and emotional pain that is caused at a severe, life threatening level by Origin.

I, personally, haven't had any problems with it. However lots of people have had pretty significant problems with it. Like people who ordered games on Origin (where it had their credit card info) got double or even triple charged for something that cost $65 (but didn't actually give them any game or anything), on top of the cost of whatever game they bought (usually Battlefield 3). Plus there has been a lot of trouble for many people activating games, which they paid for, on Origin. Basically, there's problems with Origin costing people money. And people that haven't had it happen to them yet don't know what problems it might give them in the future.

That said, there is a significant amount of relatively unwarranted whining and moaning about Origin. But some people have had some pretty major problems.

I don't really mind Origin. I mean for the most part I just buy the games on Origin and bring them over to steam. I mean it has some good deals at times so why be so picky? And I personally don't know about the Battlelog complaints as I don't have any problems with it technically (although that loud sound that plays when it reserves a slot is annoying), and I've had steam crash on me much more often than Origin has.

Yes, those are weak reasons to dislike Origin.

Speaking of weak, so is your excuse for why I shouldn't care about my $60 game forcing me to give up my privacy just so I can play it.

I don't have a 2nd computer and i'm sure most OCN members and PC gamers don't either so your foolproof method of avoiding Origin's scans is flat out pathetic. Besides, why should I have to do that in the first place?!

I just don't get how you guys can justify soooooooooooo much just to play a single stupid game.

But yeah like you say, I should go out of my way to build another rig with absolutely nothing on just so i can play 1 game in peace :/

I'll buy it if it comes to Steam WITHOUT having to use Origin.

I could care less honestly if it comes to Steam or not (it is a plus as I do like Steam). I just don't want Origin on my system.

Has anyone figured out if Origin scans the HDD it's installed in or does it scan all the HDD in your PC?

Well, there is this:

Quote:
Yay. Conspiracies. So let's see what Origin really does, shall we?
If you hook process monitor onto Origin you will not see Origin scanning anything, independently of how long you use it. So what triggered the OP's screenshot?

Origin on installation will try to find games installed on your harddrive and automatically register them within Origin. It does that in a couple of different ways:

It reads the windows games registry
It looks for games in Program Files
It looks for games in ProgramData (where, for unknown reason the OP's SMS and tax software are storing the data instead of the user profile where that data should go!)
it reads the xfire config if it finds one for games
If you look at the screenshot closely you will see that it does not actually read any files. Instead it looks for their existence and recursively walks the directory. It does not read any of your files, at least not judging from this screenshot or anything I have found on my machine.

Lastly if you monitor the network traffic that Origin causes you will see that it does not transmit anything of value to EA. So far I have not seen anything bug login credentials being submitted.

But it's always so much more fun to assume that software is inherently evil. You can hook a syscall monitor on any application and you will see that it operates all over the drive. That's not something unique to Origin. Steam will do the same if you click the "add non steam game" button.

//EDIT: something I forgot: I think people should not run any sysinternals tools without a basic understanding of what they do or at least not jump to conclusions.
