Dual Monitors with Ubuntu

Thread Starter
I've got two 19" monitors - both 1366 x 768.

I've also got an Ati X1300, my question is will this allow me to run an extended desktop across two monitors using Ubuntu 11.10? Or is it best to go for something like a Nvidia G210?

I ask because the last time I tried running dual monitors with my old 2900XT, the drivers wouldn't even allow me to turn any 3D effects on, never mind dual monitors...

Thanks in advance!

the Gallium3d drivers, the opensource drivers for ati/amd cards, has improved a lot over the last few years, so have the proprietary drivers. I don't see as many "help with my gpu drivers" type threads concerning ati/amd as i use too.

i would say try it out, report back here, if it doesn't work the way you expect, let us know for future reference. if it doesn't work, i believe amazon was selling the 9600gso's for like $35, those are good cards, and nvidia proprietary drivers are pretty good.

Thanks for the response Transhour!

Finally got the DMS connector today so I've given it a go on Ubuntu 11.10 using my two monitors; and I'm surprised at how easy it was compared to what I was expecting.

Regarding the drivers for the X1300, they're detected properly from boot and all that needed doing was changing the display to extended desktop in Ubuntu's display controls. At first the screen appeared to artefact, but after 10 seconds it resolved itself and now it's working perfectly! Huge difference between this and the Ati drivers I tried a couple of years ago.

they might be the legacy drivers, back when ati gave a damn but then again, the opensource drivers do operate quite well on the older nvidia/intel/ati cards. the laptop i have has a intel igp, and they are better than the windows drivers imho.

good you got everything working
