Stock i7 860 - Can it bottleneck my 5970?

Hey.
Used to have my CPU clocked to 4 ghz at around 1.21v vcore (think it's in my signature, not sure, haven't posted here in ages). The motherboard I had (MSI Big Bang Fuzion) broke, and I RMA'd. It broke again, and since I had bought it from the US (slightly used) quite cheap I just bought an ASUS motherboard instead. I've had a lot of problems with my 5970 during 2D applications (locking up), but it seems to be okay now. I'm playing BF3 a lot at the moment, but my framerates are really low. I'm running the newest drivers. At the Medium preset I get about 60 to 100++ FPS which is good, but if I set it at high I'd get as low as 40 fps on some maps. I've disabled HT, with HT on the game would stutter like crazy at anything over medium.
If it really is just my card not being good enough, I don't mind playing on medium, but I have a feeling something's wrong. That's why I'm wondering if the stock CPU might be bottlenecking it

Thanks for sharing your opinions. If the CPU is indeed bottlenecking the poor card I'll just OC it, but I'd rather not. It's fun to overclock, but all the stresstesting kills it for me

TL;DR: i7 860 + 5970: Kind of low FPS at High in BF3 (multiplayer) --> Bottleneck?

EDIT: Just saw the signature rig, I don't have a H50 anymore but a H70, and I have an ASUS Xonar STX as soundcard. As for my motherboard, I now have an ASUS P7P55D DELUXE.

xfire and bf inc 5970 have some issues. Shouldn't be bottle necking.

What is your GPU usage in game (I use Afterburner to monitor this)? If it's constantly at 70-99%, that means there is no CPU bottleneck. As for overclocking, I believe you can hit 4GHz again with just the right amount of work.

I use the 11.10 drivers that were released yesterday with the CAP4 profiles, will monitor GPU rate later today when I get home.

EDIT: If I do overclock, would it be safe to just put in the settings I had with my old motherboard? Or could the low vcore I used there destroy this motherboard.

Alright, so I checked Afterburner while I was playing. When BF3 was set to the ultrapreset both GPU's were doing ~100% (there was one point where I saw one stand still at 20% for a long time, not sure what graphic setting I had then, might've been a bug). At Medium/High it wasn't running at 100% but something like 60-90%.

Is this how it's supposed to be? I tried Ultra on the Bazar/Market map, and had around 50-70 FPS pretty stable. Seems decent, but the map is quite small tbh. At high I get around 60-70 fps too, not much of a difference from Ultra tbh. As for now I'm just playing on Medium, I don't really have a problem with that, but I feel like something is not correct. If I can get it to be as smooth as medium on High I'll gladly pop the i7 to 4 ghz though, so what do you think?
