overclocking?

Thread Starter
I just bought a computer from Sager. I was looking forward to a slight oc of the i7 because 2.0 is kinda pathetic, but when i go in the bios there is no cpu options anywhere.

Is there a way to unlock the cpu? or anyway i can actually oc?

oc a laptop is not a good idea, and prebuilts bios are generally locked from overclocking

yeah, i know. i paid for high quality thermal paste. so everything should be cooler than normal. I wasn't going to do anything major anyway. there's room to increase the cpu w/o the voltage going up. when you start from stock settings.

There isn't even a turbo boost option which most i7 laptop bios have...

Not really, it may not even make the slightest difference. Unless you have a bag of money over your head - dont' overclock your laptop.

Laptops have HORRIBLE air flow and heat is not displaced, so not only does your cpu itself affect temps but also your hd's + gpu will heat up the inside

Sigh...Again with these people and their non OCing of laptop logic...I'm growing disgusted with them. The only thing they get "right" is that it's not advisable because you will need to be more aware about temperatures and getting cooling for the laptop.

OK OP: There's a possibility to OC your laptop. But it is software based which means it might not be as stable and probably won't get you as much of a gain as you'll want. Also, I don't know why it's so hard for people to comprehend but GHz doesn't always indicate better performance. So just because your i72630QM is only a 2GHz chip doesn't mean it's slow/pathetic by a long shot. In fact that entry level quad of the Sandy Bridge Mobile line is almost as good or better than the last generations much higher priced extreme version. Also, it beats a freaking i5 750 desktop CPU(these are stock to stock comparisons so 2GHz quad beats a 2.66GHz desktop quad). So please don't complain; you have a good chip.

Now...if you want to OC you will need to get SetFSB(free or paid version) and probably ThrottleStop (I don't know if it is still maintained). From there you'll need to find the motherboard PLL(clock generator) information and see if they have it listed in the SetFSB database. As for the GPU usually the nvidia system tools works fine.

If you still want to OC then get those programs and use them. Report back if you have problems and I'll see if I can help.

i could not find the PPL for my sager 8130 and was unable to OC the CPU but i got the GPU (460M) to 825 core and it helped a ton.

Turbo boost is auto... And that processor, while 2GHz is "slower" than most desktops, the architecture of that chip makes it equal to an i7-920 @ stock.

There's no reason to overclock. It's plenty fast.

As an addition to what the OP wants to do here, ThrottleStop 3.4 is what you want if you wish to overclock. SetFSB requires you to donate to gain full access to the software so the former is the best option here. If anyone has anything to say against overclocking. I point to my sig below... Stock is 2.13Ghz and ThrottleStop allows it to stay at 3GHz HT off. Not sure how this is a problem since temps aren't that terrible for the chip.

If you have a good cooling pad, Cooler Master U2 should work wonders for you as I have the U3, then I don't see why you shouldn't try at little. If you get an unstable overclock, you'll see decreased performance before it crashes and then you can just back down a bit.
