24-120 f4?

Thread Starter
I know canon users love the 24-105 f4 and I read great reviews about it. Any nikon shooters with a 24-120 f4? I couldn't find any reviews on it when used on a dx body.

Thanks in advance

This is a full frame review, so results (In terms of resolution, etc.) are going to be generally better on a DX body.

many go to the 24-120 when they want a higher quality lens, without the bulk of the 24-70 but want a longer zoom range..

ive seen a few people who go from the 24-70 down to a 24-120 b/c they dont want the bulk, weight, and size.

I actually sold mines last Saturday.

It's a pretty good lens. I used it for an everyday lens and it worked great. Lately I've just been using my 35mm and 50mm so it decided to sell it. Things I didn't like about it was the build quality. For a $1300 lens it wasn't built like how I hoped.

Was the build quality really that bad? What was so bad with the build quality?

This is just my personal opinion, YMMV

I got it for the the VR. I was getting into video and wanted something I can run and gun with. The 24-105mm from canon is sorta the go to lens for Canon. I was hoping the Nikon 24-120mm would have been comparable. It worked ok in this aspect, but I was still getting too much camera movement. The VR didn't seem to be as effective as the VR on the 70-200mm II. @120mm I was getting acceptable shots as low as 1/30. Which is not bad. But compared to the 70-200mm I was getting keepers at 200mm and 1/15.

As for photos, it was a really good lens. It was my everyday shooter for a while. It was versatile and I really enjoyed using it. I was hoping it was built more like my 70-200, but it had a lot of plastic. The focus ring is crazy small, for me this was a pita because of what I was trying to do with video. It also had a lot of play in the focus ring. This is sorta a non issue because not many people manual focus. Don't get me wrong, Its a really good lens, but boils down to how much you can get it for.

Although I really enjoyed using the lens, I ended up firmly believing it was not worth the MSRP of 1300 bucks. I bought it used for $800. I opted to get a 85mm f1.4 and Sony sony hx9v for running and gunning instead. Looking at your sig, it looks like you're looking for an everyday lens. It could work pretty good in that aspect. You always have your 50mm f1.4 to fall back on for extra speed.

if you have any specific questions about the actual lens, let me know. I can't take any more pictures with it, but i have a pretty good recollection of the workings of that lens. Keep in mind the lens has only been out for about 1 year.

I don't own one, but a buddy of mine uses one on his D700 as a walk around lens. If you can deal with the BD, it's pretty decent. It's not a pro lens so you can't really complain about build. It's a plastic lens that's not meant for being banged around. Go to a local shop and take some test shots if possible. The shots I've seen from this lens are ok, but I don't mind hauling my 24-70 around so I'm good.
