Twin Frozr Cooling

Thread Starter
Searched and found that with the twin frozr cooler design a side intake fan is better than exhaust, even though most heat is dissipated opposite the mobo towards the side panel.

With sli'd MSI twin frozr cooled gpus, what is optimal placement for the incoming air?

Blow air directly onto the heatsink? Air directed under the two fans?

Planning to drill two holes side by side for two 80mm fans on the side panel and want to get it right the first time. smile.gif

Any input, advice appreciated. Thanks!

Do whatever you can to push air from the front to the back of the case. Do you have any room up front for extra or more powerful fans? If you want to cut a side panel, you should go with one or two 120s instead. Then you can have air blowing over the heatsink and below the cards so that they can suck in the "fresh" air.

I have 2 x 140mm fans for front intake and it's just empty space from there to the psu and gpu. Where would be good places to put extra fans?

Can you mount fans on the back side of the hard drive cage? My case has two 120 mm mounts there and I have two fans there. I looked at pictures of your case, but can't tell. If you have 3 5.25" external bays free, you can buy one of these http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=328&cl_index=2&sc_index=5&ss_index=12&g=f and throw a Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1850 in it. That's what I have and it will match your case nicely.

Check out some posts by eHume. He's the man when it comes to airflow. He actually recommends not using a rear exhaust fan. He says to take the fan out and actually cut out the grill. The CPU fan will push the air out. He's also a big proponent of blocking off the top of the case so that all air has to be pushed out the back.

I removed the hdd cages to aid in airflow towards the back. The rear fan was removed, but I have not cut out the grill...yet...

Original plan was to add 2 x 80mm to the side panel and later a 140mm intake on the bottom.

Here is a rendition of my case and fans:

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I have a fan on the bottom as an intake as well. If you're willing to cut it out to make one, all the better. I removed my rear exhaust fan, but didn't cut out the grill. I did remove all of the expansion slot covers in the back, even though they were already perforated. I can feel a good bit of air coming out there. I'll draw up a schematic of my case fan situation when I have a little more time. +rep to you for your willingness to cut up your case!

Yes please do.

Well for a time I had sli 460 today (had to rma it...) Was getting temps of 67C for top and 60C for bottom. The twin froze design is very good. Still gonna add dem fans though. smile.gif

I've got 2x MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr II in SLI in a 600T case. If you've got decent airflow from the front of the case towards the cards then the getto'ing with cables ties of a 120mm fan on the outside behind the PCI slots (blanking plates rmoved) is probably all you need to create a nice airflow between the cards and rapid exhaust of the internally vented hot air before it gets sucked back into the Frozr intake fans. A full Heaven 1080p/FURMARK run whch maxes out both cards has my cards running 67ºc and 62ºc respectively. No need to fit side intakes and now you can have an unobstructed side window to be able to see all the goodies inside.

Nice idea on that +rep. My case actually has a black box that attaches to the back of the case covering the slots where the video cards go. You can mount a 120mm fan there to suck out the hot air, but I've never tried it. Others with my case call that device a black box of fail biggrin.gif I don't think it would work as good as your set up because the fan isn't mounted directly against the case.

All I wanted was a reason to get an sli set up, use some tools to drill some holes, and have some fun.

Thanks to your simple mod, it is no more.

Thank you will test it out!
