Budget BF3 Build

post #1 of 28
Thread Starter
I haven't had time to price hunt... what's a budget machine that can run BF3 at relatively low settings at 1680x1050?

I have a PSU already... just need mobo, CPU, heatsink, 4GB RAM, and video card.

I have access to a Microcenter so I can get a bundle deal from there.
Once again...

My quick guesstimate would be:

2500k ~200.
Mobo ~100-150
Ram ~50
GPU ~200 560ti
Heatsink ~50

Question though, are you replacing the sig rig? Or need an additional machine I take it?

No way that is needed... I know those prices are way too high.

I am envisioning the below estimated hardware should be fine for BF3 at low:

AMD Athlon/Phenom II X4 = $80
Mobo = $80
4GB RAM = $35
GPU???
Heatsink = $20

a duel core, a 970 Mobo and a 6850
post #6 of 28
If you look at the minimum required... it's pretty low. But that said, you want to be higher then that, right

I'd say something like a Phenom II (955 BE can go for 90-100 easy) 4 gigs of ram. (Which is super cheap, I picked mine up for 25 bucks.)

As for a card, an AMD HD 6850?

I think I would try shooting for GTX460/5770/6770 range cards at a minimum.

Might want to look here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ance,3063.html

Toms benchmarked alot of cards on LOW and HIGH at 1680x1050.

I have a Phenom II X4, 4gb of ram and a GTS 250 and it plays BF3 on low/medium at 1920x1080 at somewhere around 40FPS, and no I'm not lying.

These are a good benchmark, but remember Multiplayer (Which is the only reason to play BF3) fluctuates a lot more then Single player, so I'd want to shoot for a bit higher then this.

That said, it all depends on what FPS you want. If you're shooting for just 30 won't be hard at all.

6850 or 6790 would be my guess if you want to have any headroom for FPS dips, such as tank exploding next to you.
Both are on par with a GTX 460, I get ~70-90FPS on low [1920x1080] with everything down.
