Help Me Stay on Linux - Maybe a New Distro? - Page 3

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I have actually been maintaining my own custom kernel based on Liquorix for years. I build them into debian packages for easy maintenance.

Since I'm most used to the Debian file structure and package management, I thought I would start testing other Debian-based distros first. I also prefer a "rolling" release schedule. I tried Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) and it was fast and stable. Unfortunately, it seemed to lag quite a bit behind in up-to-date software. That would have been ok, but there were some issues with gnome-vfs that prevented me from easily performing my daily work.

I am currently running on the regular version of Linux Mint. It seems that most of the tweaks that I normally do to Ubuntu after install are already done and I like their choices. I am using Gnome 2.x with metacity (compiz disabled) along with my Liquorix kernel. I switched from the proprietary nvidia driver to nouveau. Everything is very fast and snappy, better than Windows - which is how it should be. It "just works" right now so I think I'll stick with Linux Mint for the time being. I am curious to see what they do with their next version which will be based on Gnome 3. I don't mind the Gnome 3 UI as longs as things work. It seems like LM is building lots of modules on top of Gnome 3 to make things easy and usable.

I have been intrigued by Gentoo distros like Sabayon for some time though so I might give that a shot too, among others.

Cheers.

Nothing is better than Gentoo.
