Where can I cut corners? Need this computer down to $600-650... - Page 2

would definitely help to know the primary use for this computer. Saw you said gaming is a priority. Is this computer for yourself? Obviously, you could save 100$ by going with a 955BE. I'd much rather have a 955BE with a higher end video card than a 2500k with a crap video card if gaming is a priority.

light gaming, school and personal use. I play bf3, but I dont mind turning the settings down. graphical beauty isnt really a priority, however gaming is.

Thanks all for the suggestions, how about a cheap hard drive? Any recommendations?

There really isn't much room left to add in much hdd/opticals if you're dead set on the i5-2500k, that thing takes up a third of your budget and it's just not feasible. If you want a decent hdd and optical as well as more than a gtx 460, you're going to have to either cut $100 from the cpu budget and get an i3 (which is fine for gaming) or get a really cheap mATX board with almost no features which is an option if you won't overclock/use a lot of sata ports/ don't need a lot of usb ports.

EDIT: Oh, and this isn't a good time to buy a "cheap" hard drive because prices have pretty much doubled recently and will stay that way (or get worst) before 2012. If you don't already have a hard drive, this isn't a good time for low budget builds.

$600 with an i5 2500K is nearly impossible. Here are just a few suggestions to cut the price down...

Case - $35.99 compared to your $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...E16811146061&T

CPU - i3 2100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&Tpk=i3%202100
It is a dual core, but still perfectly fine for gaming.

Cooler - Stock
Since you won't be overclocking with an i3, you really don't need the extra cooling. Even if you decide to stick with an i5 2500K, you should be able to bring it to around 4Ghz with the stock cooler.

GPU - 560ti or 6950
Both these cards are more or less equal in performance. You do not need to buy the superclock or pre-overclocked versions, just overclock them yourself.
Also if you don't mind you can step down to a 6870 (or nvidia equal) to save costs. You should still be able to get pretty decent performance.

Hard drive - Use old
I really, really recommend reusing your drive for this new build due to the very bad prices of HDDs now. You'll have to use it for a good amount of time, extending to next year though

TLDR: The biggest corner you could cut is on time. Wait for the holiday sales. They're so darn close.

Have a microcenter nearby?
Have older parts you could use for a while?

If not. You could build a complete AMD rig...
Prices are for today. Hang in there for even sweeter deals.

$56
@ NCIX couldn't get a link but its there.

955BE+990xa UD3 250
The CPU+MB was @ $200 twice since they opened shop in California a couple months ago.

Hyper 212+ 26

HD 6850 150

Rosewill Hive 650w 80
Sale @ 64
Could drop this to the 550w model.

2x2GB low profile ram 30
You probably don't need more than 4gb for gaming.
unless you plan to fraps/edit gameplay footage etc.
2x4GB Ram is around $35 on sale

Curcial m4 64GB 110
SSD prices haven't been impacted by flooding so far. Get one of these instead for now. Shellshocker was $85

Pass on HDD and OD

To give you an idea.

This is $702 with $30 in rebates. (592 without SSD)

If you sniped deals over the last three months, could easily get a 1TB HDD, an OD, 8GB ram. on top of this for around the same price.

Edit: @OP. Your sig rig. This thread. What?
If you're going to upgrade wait for Ivy-bridge at least.
