Server Noise Reduction Cabinet?

Thread Starter
So just finished my server, spec's below. And everything is perfect, but its a lot louder than my friend told me it would be... He has the same one and blah blah blah... So I was thinking of trying to make an "Isolation Box" is what it was call. Basically it a wooden box that has fans on it to help limit the sound...

Has anyone heard of this?

Had any success with it?

Have any new and different ideas to help me keep my office and place of peace?

Thank you!

Whats loud the actual fans?

Just get some quieter fans

What case is it in? My server is in a 4U rackmount case and its virtually silent. You can buy sound-dampening server racks if you have the $$$$

Very nice server specs btw what are you running on it?

Yes, the fans are loud.

It's a Supermicro 4u SC747.

  • 4x 5000 RPM Hot-swap Cooling Fans
  • 2x 5000 RPM Hot-swap Rear Exhaust Fan
That would be your problem. Have you tried adjusting fan speed in BIOS? It should have a couple different presets to choose from. Other than that I'm not sure how easy it is to replace those hot-swap fans with something else, shouldn't be a problem though.

Set them to be in power saving mode in the BIOS, but they are still pretty loud. It doesnt help the room is 10x10 with hard wood flooring.

Any more recommendations?

I'd try calling up the manufacturer and seeing if they can offer quite hot-swap fans for it. I have a Dell Poweredge rackmount, and it's very very loud. There are some less feasible options I can think of as well - Buy that Supermicro case that's advertised as super quite, and you could put down some carpeting in that room lol. From what I've seen carpeting dampens a lot of sound vs. hardwood.
