best $300 solution

Thread Starter
i want a graphics card to play bf3 @ 1680x1050 without dropping below 60fps and averaging around 75-80 hopefully.

im looking to spend around $300 AUD (roughly the same as US, prices are similar as well)

i was thinking of crossfire 6850s($150 each) or 6870s($170) [seems to be the best value so far, crossfire 6800s ****s on everything pretty much)

will the 6870s be overkill?

is powercolour a decent brand?

this is my first time running dual GPUs? what sort of problems will i have.

im thinking of upgrading to a full tower.

will my PSU be ok? will my PSU be okay if i overclock my CPU as well?

I am using the 11.10 AMD drivers for my xfire, it runs at ultra but random micro-stuttering causes it to randomly drop below 30fps once in a blue moon and is annoying, so I play at high and its fine. Never drops below 60fps. I did this solution to save money and make games shiny until the GTX 680.

I think it is becoming rarer and rarer to get ones that unlock, though i would wait for someone else opinion i steer clear of ati after my 5770 and the horrible driver problems i had with it.

I would try and find a used GTX 480 for ~$200 if your going single card.

Two AMD 6870's crossfired will be a bit better than one AMD 6970 or slightly over a GTX 580 performance. A great price/performance ratio.

AMD cards do better crossfire with 6950's or higher. In December of 2010 I had two 6870's and had micro stutter when pushed in Crysis.

Here's a great article I was turned onto (Aug 2011) to read regarding AMD's scaling and why it does better in scalability by cutting corners to do it. They get better with higher GPU performing cards 6950 and up.

CrossFire, SLI, And Micro-Stuttering - read the "CrossFire With Two Cards" paragraph if nothing else.

An AMD 6950 2GB unlocked or a GTX 560Ti 2GB heavily over clocked will do a great job as a single GPU solution and come close to accomplishing what your looking for at your price range. You can always crossfire/SLI a second down the road.

As for the question do 6950's unlock, it is getting less and less. A great choice that comes with the BIOS switch and 100% going to unlock is the Sapphire Toxic AMD 6950 2GB. Another great card that can over clock to compare in performance on the Nvidia side would be the MSI GTX 560Ti 2GB TwinFrozr II. Both hard to get, either will be great and right at your budget.

The only single GPU cards that will get your best performance in BF3 that your looking for would be an over clocked 6970 or 580 even more so. Both out of your price range.

AMD does better in BF3 with High settings 4XMSAA off and Nvidia does better in Ultra settings with 4xMSAA on.

I'd have suggested wait until the next gen cards come out, but I'm assuming you've been wanting to play BF3 since release. The next gen cards start to trickle out with lowest GPU's first end of December (just before Christmas) and leading to the big boys after the first of the year is the speculation.

Good luck in deciding. I'm sure you'll get a bunch of varying opinions on the matter. In the end, it's your choice. Do your homework.

PS...edited to add: I just noticed your new....Welcome to OCN!

the cheapest gtx480 i can get is $280 (probably $300 with shipping and all).
performs similar to the 6970 which costs $350. seems like a good single card option..

edit: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/1152...tx480-bf3.html this guy is getting 45 fps (probably at 1920x1080). doesnt sound too promising.... i think i will struggle to reach 60fps @ 1680x1050.

great article; still reading it... i would rather have 50-70 fps (60avg) rather than 30-120fps (75 avg+microstutter)

if i buy a 6950 i probably wont crossfire it down the road. when i bought my 4890 i though i would crossfire it but it is pretty much pointless crossfiring it now. if im going to crossfire i need to do it one go i have figured. i dont buy graphics frequently enough crossfire down the road.

Get GTX 460 1gb SLI. It can be had for $200~. About on par with a GTX 580.

Alternatively find a used GTX 580 and buy it.
