I just can't see it happening.

I'm stuck on 3Mb/s for the foreseeable future, with no plans to upgrade. It's not going to turn 2014 and i'll suddenly have 100Mb/s.

I would be excited.
But they have absolutely no plans to roll it out to my exchange.
Which means I get to keep my 1.5Mbps.
Brilliant, thank you BT.

Virgin Media 50Mb/s (A solid 6MB/s all day every day)
Even though fibre is coming to my exchange, I honestly don't see the point of upgrading. I currently get 18Mbps on regular broadband, and moving to fibre would more than double my bill. Since I've been getting 18Mbps I haven't once thought "hmmm, I wish this was faster."

Weeeel looks like the rest of the world has moved forward in terms of upgrading their connections. Unfortunately for us the big 2 in Canada insists that our price increase and caps lowered even more.

I can't really see BT ever catching up to Virgin's network as from the green cabinets to the homes it's still copper phone cables that are older than Christ whilst Virgin uses the newer coaxial cables designed for the internet.

BT doesn't need to directly compete with Virgin seeing as a lot of people find the idea of not having a BT managed line an alien prospect. BT has been overpricing broadband from the start with a below average product I don't see why it would change.

I have used virgin, the contention was abysmal (peak times = MUCH slower connection). Their backhaul is poorer than most think...saturated dlsams, oversubscribed access points etc. This might be better in other areas, though.

Coaxial cables weren't 'designed for the internet', they are just shielded very well and allow a higher frequency transmission rate with fewer errors.

To be honest, I am biased, I am involved in BT's (actually it's not BT, it's openreach) fibre rollout and get my connections for free
