AMD + SSD = Epic fail

Thread Starter
So, after returning my SSD to Intel and getting a brand new one, I still have the same problem as before.

My S.M.A.R.T values on my SSD are very very strange and very unlikely, I thought this would be solved by getting a new SSD which Intel sent me, but no, It shows that it's my motherboards fault.

I read these values thru Intel SSD Toolbox and SSD-Life, and both shows the same strange values

I've been in contact with Gigabyte that said:
Quote:
AHCI does not support S.M.A.R.T.

I then replied:
Quote:
And what do you mean that AHCI does not support S.M.A.R.T?!
Is this an Gigabyte or AMD thing not supporting S.M.A.R.T while under AHCI?

Because I have friends that has AMD builds that shows them S.M.A.R.T values.

Gigabyte then answered:
Quote:
This is an AMD chipset thing. With the AMD 870 chipset there is no SMART available when AHCI is enabled.

I was like, "WHAT DA F?!"

So basically running a SSD on some AMD systems is a total failure, because you won't be able to check your S.M.A.R.T values.

And I thought this was 21th century, not 1970...

So you AMD boys, running a SSD in AHCI, how are your S.M.A.R.T values? What chipsets do you have?

Maybe we can then find out which Motherboards/chipsets you should NOT buy if you want a full functional SSD.

Thanks

S'cuse me?

My SSD works fine, AHCI and SMART works fine.

It's a gigacrap motherboard problem, not am AMD chipset issue.

AFAIK all other board manufacturers don't have this problem. Lesson learned: don't buy low end gigasheet boards. They suck.

But you have 990 chipset, maybe they fixed it on that one.

On my however, it's not possible it seems.

Noted: It works on AM3+ boards!

So you can see correct values on the 870 chipset? Like power on hours/work time, data written and such stuff? With AHCI acitivated?

Is this mechanical harddrives or SSDs you have?

I have the 870 chipset aswell.

Please tell us how can you check SMART status under Windows. AMD RaidXpert doesn't allow me (790FX, WXP).

I have my M4 on a Gigabyte 790X board, which is kind of lame. Not too worried about SMART, though.

S.M.A.R.T worked fine on my Gigabyte 770TA-UD3 and it also works on the 990FXA-UD3.

Many Gigabyte boards + SMART does not work. Solution? Turn off SMART. If you want to find your SSD's health, run a 3rd party application.

You can USE CrystalDiskInfo for checking SMART of Your HDDs and SSDs.
