[HWCanucks] Seagate Barracuda 3TB Review

3TB products may no longer be all that unique but in order to achieve such large hard drives, some sacrifices had to be made. In relation to their lower capacity brethren, such massive storage capacity meant four 750GB or five 600GB platters needed to be used which ended up increasing overall latency and lowered performance due to higher seek times. Now Seagate is pushing areal density to the next level by introducing the Barracuda 3TB; the first 1TB per platter HDD that boasts three terabytes of space (Hitachi’s new Cinemastar and Deskstar lines are only available in 1TB capacity for the time being) along with 64MB of cache.

Impressive to say the least.

When you've sold a kidney, and part of your liver, then you might be able to. HDD prices have rocketed

You know what I really really dislike about HardwareCanucks? It's how contradictory they are, in so many things they say.
They are good at running the tests, so on their site I usually just look at the charts. But never ever read anything they say, because it's pure BS.

This review is another great example. Just look at the last page, and see where they list the Pros/Cons. As a Con, they list the $180 price as being very high. But then they proceed to give this product their "DAM GOOD VALUE" award...

True. But I bet the conclusion is in comparison to the value for other drives at the moment. Realize that a 1tb wd black is 200 right now.

wedge, it has sense.

$180 for a 3TB disk that performs better than a WD VelociRaptor, while having ten times the capacity and costing $20 less, is DAMN GOOD VALUE xD

I personally use Seagate drives on all the computers at home, and I have yet to run into an issue. The only non-seagate drives I have are the storage Sammy F3 on my sigrig, and the Sammy drive on the dead Aspire 1690. The other 4+1+2+1=8 drives are Seagates.

180$ is definitely not high for 3tb. Maybe 2 months ago it would have been high, but 1tb drives 7200rpm are selling for 120-160$ now...so if it sticks to MSRP this will be the drive to get

Only downside I can see is the two-year warranty. But as long as you backup your data like normal there shouldn't be any issues. I think I might pick a couple of these for my next build.
