Slow Internet - Rubbish Wireless Router?

Hi guys,

I've had speed tests done on my parents phone line by two independant companies, neither of which are their actual supplier and the results are that they should be able to receive at least 5Mbps with an estimated 8Mbps final speed, however - their download speed is 258kb/s (abysmal!) which is ~2Mbps and it's driving them crazy (they're on an 'up to 20Mbps' service by Orange, UK).

They're approximately 1 mile from the exchange, but I know people who are circa 5 miles away from their local exchange and receive faster speeds than my parents do.

On top of that, their router (Netgear, but I'm not sure on the model number) has the weakest signal I've ever experienced. In the next room the signal drops out and isn't usable. I've tried every trick in the book without hardware modifications, and it's made no difference.

Considering the speed test results - is it possible that this router could be causing the slow speeds? I thought that maybe the condition of the line could be a factor - but surely the speed tests by each company would have highlighted this and affected the results of their checks?

It could be a number of things, the router's weak signal could have to do with the thick walls or could be a weak router. The lines could be to blame but if testers say it should be solid than most likely the router is the problem, if you can find another one and borrow it just to see it would be worth it to check. But yes a router could very well be the problem, consumer grade ones aren't usually built that well.

Thanks for the quick reply - I didn't want to sound a fool as I'm not very experienced in networking and wasn't sure if the router itself could limit the speeds, but it just doesn't make sense to me as to why it's so low! 2Mbps internet is just painful!

Are there any routers that you would recommend which won't limit the line speed and have strong wireless signal?

I would call your ISP and tell them it's running slow if you're renting it from them they should replace it for free if there's any problems with it. I doubt the router model is really the problem as much as the one you have is just a bit old, worn down or just defective.

Like Scrappy said, call the ISP first before doing anything. Maybe it's the router. Have you tried a speedtest using ethernet?

This

run it directly from the modem without the router, and compare with the router. If it's still sucky, it's just a slow connection to the ISP

Thanks for the suggestions guys - looks like I'll have to whinge to Orange and see what they have to say.

Someone asked earlier if I tried a speedtest via Ethernet and the answer is yes - I had a cable run from the router to a laptop. I'll run it again when I get in from work and post the results in the OP.

I also read a comment about connecting directly to the modem? AFAIK we don't have one - all that came with the internet bundle was the Netgear router.

That router should be an ADSL2+ modem with an integrated router system (4 ethernet ports on the back and WiFi). I know those buggers, usually they suck.

Call Orange and explain them your situation. If needed, request a modem replacement.
