3G Modem in Ubuntu 11.04...help!

Thread Starter
I'm trying to setup my generic 3G Modem in Ubuntu. I'm running into issues with getting it setup. I'm lost and not sure where to go. I can't seem to find anything I need form Google.

Here is where I am....

Code:
$ lsusb
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 004: ID 05c6:0015 Qualcomm, Inc.
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 5986:0102 Acer, Inc Crystal Eye Webcam
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Obviously I'm after device 004.

So onto dmesg...

Code:
[ 2515.975008] scsi10 : usb-storage 6-1:1.2
[ 2515.978617] option 6-1:1.3: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected

[ 2516.989502] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
There's a lot of other info, but I 'think' this is what I'm after.

So....now what? I tried to setup a mobile broadband in Network Connections. No devices listed.

So where do I go from here? I've read about wvdial and such, but I have no clue where to start.

Help?

I'm lost here. No linux gurus in the house?

I'm unsure how to proceed from here. To me, it's installed. But obviously that's not the case?

what does:

Code:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
or

Code:
 sudo ifconfig eth0 up
say if you run it?

I'm at work right now and I will post results once I'm home.

But I'm going to take a shot in the dark here. Wouldn't wlan0 just be my wifi card? and eth0 be my lan card?

eth0 is the first network device the kernel loads, and wlan0 would be the first wifi device it loads...sorta arbitrary in that regard.

as for this, i was taking a stab in the dark, as i don't know much about them, but i'd imagine it would load as a network device, i just didn't know if it would detect as wifi or lan.

it does appear to be loaded, just don't know how it connects, how does it connect in windows?

I was waiting for that to be posted!

Sadly it only supports GSM modems. Mine is CDMA.
