Oh for the love of - the odds that a sentient AI will eventually use this things offspring to kill all human? Zero. The odds that the ruling oligarchy will eventually use these things to suppress dissent? Predictable.

Why they have it tethered? Afraid it'll run off and take over?

Push-ups are great tho.

In testing phases they often have them wired directly to computers for debugging and telemetry information. You'll find a couple videos of BigDog (or AlphaDog, can't remember) tethered as well, they'll later do tests standalone.

The main goal for PETMAN was to test the durability of chem suits for the Army, so rough terrain navigation probably wasn't incorporated in its design. This project is still a work in progress and funding might come for a faster field ready unit if they succeed on their current contract.

It depends on the robot's intended purpose and ability to traverse rough and sometimes dynamic terrain. That hexapod is being demonstrated in a very static, symmetrical environment. And it appears to be executing a programmed event rather than analyzing it's environment and making decisions of where to place the feet in real time.

The umbilical transfers hydraulic power. The article states they might be able to easily adapt it to be a self contained system since they did so with their BigDog project.

Since you didn't specify a time frame that first possibility still has a probability greater than 0.

Most likely we will be using these robots as remote soldiers like in the movie Surrogates.

Looks awesome.

I would think that running presents a bit more of a challenge due to the more dynamic nature of the movement, at some point you will have both feet off the ground.

Oh, and I love the fact that it is wearing climbing shoes during the walking demo; they have a lot of friction and are flexible, perfect for this application. Nothing like using an off the shelf product instead of spending $$$ designing something only a little better.

Edit:

That and to prevent any damage should something go wrong. There is an example of this in the alpha dog video when it starts to run; at some point it trips itself up and is arrested by the gantry cables, probably saving some damage to an expensive piece of kit.
