wait for kepler? - Page 2

theses high quality pwoer supply can deliver more power. like the ax 850 can delvier 950w at his max i think....

btw, any game can run cpu and gpu's on max load. and a stock 2600k(stock)+ gtx 580 sli on test bed are getting 600w from the wall. And the 680 would consume less power than 580. so i guess it would run very well on my psu with fans and stuff without any kind of problem.

true or not?

Maxing out psu's to the max is bad for the psu and real bad for the component wanting more power but can't get it.
That was the max my bottom card can bench at. Even as a single card run on the same power supply the max I could get was 940MHz, the bottom one won't do that. I didn't use any more than 1.15v for the tests.

Perhaps I could have gotten more with more voltage but on air I don't feel comfortable doing so.

At stock clocks on my 980x and tri sli 480's, I pull around 800-850. Now overclocked to 4.65ghz on the 980x and 900/2000 1.175v, that pulls 1200w. 400w jump with overclocking. It would not be wise to run a 850w psu at 850w+ for long periods like 2hrs of gaming. That will kill things. Maybe not today, but overtime things will die. Running 750w on a 850w psu all day long should be fine on good psu's like the AX,HX.

This is true. I play games at stock clocks, because let's face it, I don't need to OC to get solid 60FPS and at stock with a Sandy chip I shouldn't be pushing THAT much from the PSU.

The times when the cards are running balls to the wall is only for benching which is a few minutes at most.

When I had my i7 950 setup at 4GHz the PSU would buzz like all hell was about to break loose but now with the power sipping Sandy it barely makes a peep. So I'm assuming I did it a favor in choosing a lower TDP chip.

I would have loved to get an AX1200 but unfortunately it was too long for my setup with a fan feeding my bottom 580 in the HAF 932, any PSU longer than the HX850 would run into the mounting position for the bottom fan and tis no bueno.

Much agreed. With my setup now, running surround at 5850x1080p res, every bit helps. going from 850 to 875 gets another 5fps in crysis 2. IF you don't need the power from overclocks, no need to run them for sure. I sold my 980x and now have the M4E-Z and 2500k @ 5ghz. It pulls 122w max. My 980x was pulling 165w. I got 2 580's hoping they would be faster than my 3 480's in surround but they fell shy about 15% less. Sold them to a friend and now he's running surround.

Wow, 122w at 5GHz? That's not too bad and right around what my old 950 was pulling at stock lol.

So I'm assuming the 2600K would be another say 15w+ at the same clocks?

I'm really not looking forward to Kepler/28nm/dieshrunk Fermis that are coming up just for the sole reason that I'm going to find myself sitting on Newegg with 2 in my cart with the pointer hovering over the purchase button.

But no doubt when they come, whatever they may be they will be pretty damn epic and I'm going to need some serious self restraint. :/

I wouldn't wait... Why? Because no one guarantees me that these cards will be good from the start, maybe some will have overheating issues or something like that... I would go right now for GTX 570 if I had money, tho... So I will buy it after my birthday in February... You should buy new one asap, or you will miss your chance and drop that money for the gpu... xD

Wait for kepler, i say too.

But i really hope that rumors that nvidia will release the low-end cards first on march/april 2012, are false, damn false.

I don't want in my 2012 new rig with a 3700k cpu, to use my old 9800GT card, just to wait for nvidia slow ass to release the high end cards, 670 and 680.
