FX build - 8120 or 8150?

Thread Starter
Hello,

So I'm in the process of purchasing parts for a completely new build, and I'm wondering whether the 8120 or 8150 is the better option. The only 8120s being stocked in my country are 125W TDP versions.

Are 8150s just better binned or are they just clocked higher? I guess what I'm asking is, can an 8120 run at 3.6GHz at the same voltage as an 8150 with no trouble?

TIA

I believe that when a processor comes off the line they test them to see how well they perform. The best ones get sent out as 8150 the lesser performace tested cpus get sent as 8120. That doesn't mean to say that you not be able to run them both at 3.6 GHz. It just means that you your shooting for the highest speed the 8150 will have your best bet over the 8120.

1100T or 1090T, you won't regret it.

Do you plan to overclock? If so, I would just go with the 8120--no doubts that you could oc it beyond an 8150 easily with a decent board.

I do plan to, I was just curious if 8150s are able to go higher than 8120s due to possibly being better binned. If they aren't and are just instead randomly assigned then I would go with the 8120 for sure.

I plan to buy a Sabertooth 990FX.

Look at the clock and wattage difference between the two.
Believe me, the 8150s are higher binned and it isn't random.

Even both the 1090T and the 8120 overclocked to their max...
The 1090T either meets it or exceeds it while using less power.

Look it up if you don't don't believe me.

I would believe they're binned like that, but frankly there haven't been enough reports to see if the trend holds true.

I don't understand the point of suggesting the X6 over the 8120 or 8150 unless we know what the OP is going to be doing. OP, what are you going to be doing?

At idle an 8150-based system pulls less power than a 1100T-based system, and only OVERCLOCKED and at full load the 8150 consumes 40 more watts than an 1100T--if you ran the system at full load all day everyday for a month, it would amount to $4 more in power consumption than a 1100T system. If you ran the systems at idle, the BD would cost less in power consumption each month. If you're a normal user and even used your system for literally 50% of the hours in a month, the power consumption differences are negligible. The power consumption differences between BD are very much overstated. Not overclocked there is only ~12w consumption difference between BD and 1100T systems. Specific performance per watt is one thing, but overall power consumption really isn't an issue. Here are some charts: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/...mance_review/9
