Asus Gene z vs iv extreme or (z)

Thread Starter
Im planning to buy a new motherboard to replace my last one.
However, it is getting harder and harder to find places that sell these locally.

I was looking at the gene z and was thinking about buying.it.
Is there a difference between it and the iv extreme?

Ill be using the following.

i7 2600k
Zotac gtx 580 amp ^2
8 gb 1600 g skill
2 tb hdd
And a 700 w modular psu

Think a mATX would suffice?
Don't plan on adding anything else.

mATX will be perfect for you. This little board is great, absolutely love it.

I have the Gene and I had the Extreme P67. Both are nice, the biggest difference is expandability. If you do not plan to go beyond two cards, then the Gene will work great, however, if you ever want to do three cards you should get the Extreme, either the P67 or the Z68 since they are identical boards except that the Z68 has SDD caching and Lucid Virtu.

I'm not just a member of the Hair CLUB for Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z68 mATX owners ... I'm also the owner .... errr DERP or something like that ?

I posted this in another thread a few minutes ago, but fits here too ... the Gene-Z has 2 PCI-e x16 slots so you can SLI and CrossfireX, or even Tri-Fire or Quad-Fire with the right GPU's
and with a PCI-E Riser Card Extender Extension Cable, something like so ... ... you could do that AND still use the PCI-e x4 slot for something like a Sound card or TV turner or whatever if you had to have something like that, so really you don't have to give up much if ANYTHING in going down to a mATX sized board, especially with THIS mATX board.

On top of that the mATX GENE-Z = $170 and the ATX EXTREME-Z = $360 are 1 or 2 extra PCI-e slots that you may never use worth an extra $190 ?

The real question really boils down to if you wanna run dual SLI at full 16x speeds or even go triple SLI down the road. If you think so, then the Extreme is your better choice. You can do SLI with the Gene-z but, the second PCI-E slot is only 8x not 16x speed and you loose the ability to use the PCI-E slot unless you use riser card like King showed above.

I've owned several Asus mobo's over the years in my builds and my Gene-z is the best and most favorite i've ever owned. Hell, it made me wanna make a new case mod project based upon the Asus ROG color scheme even!

I just purchased a gene Z board, its amazing!!! I don't know about you but usually SLI 580 is more than the average consumer needs. So unless you need to go tri-SLI than I don't see the need for a the IV Extreme.

One thing I would caution is when using SLI make sure you have many fans exhaust/intake at the gpus. Which case are you using?

Amazing!! Nice color scheme thumb.gif

Why not use a water cooler so makes the board stand out even more instead of covering it up with that cpu cooler?
