[Wired] China Builds World-Class Supercomputer Sans Intel, AMD - Page 3

Why does the U.S. government need to support any companies R&D ???? If they can't do it themselves selling $1000+ processors then they should go out of business!!!!! I'm sorry but I bought my hardware and thats all the support they are getting from me, They aren't getting my tax dollars too!

As long as we can keep that(which we should considering Windows, Apple, and Google aren't going away anytime soon) we should be fine.

Hopefully this type of competition will fuel some INVESTMENT into IBM, AMD, Nvidia, Via(?), etc# from the government... in a 'Cash on delivery' sorta way.
lol, why should you care if the company is american or not. It's not like 'american' companies give you some special discount, or even create jobs in America for that matter. In anycase, you should start getting used to chinese stuff getting better than American stuff. Their government pumps a lot of money into technology like this, something Americans can't afford to at the moment. This chip is probably the product of such an investment as well.

If the procs are cheap and fast enough, it could spread like wildfire some years out. They could also be exclusively sold with-in the country, while still making a butt-load of money.

Wouldn't software support would just require a different compiler for a different instruction set? IIRC

I'm hoping win8 will help to change that, but we will have to wait and see how much it matters and how fast it can change.
Yeah, I thought that was an interesting fact. Although the consumer market will likely see a slow transition from x86, I'm sure countries investing in supercomputers won't have a problem dropping it. I could see them transitioning relatively fast if it's worth the investment.

Yeah, it's called ARM. That already is the next big instruction set.
