i7 930 4.2OC failed after 15 months stable

Thread Starter
My rig ran stable for 15 months at 4.2 MHz and then started crashing during gaming (Company of Heroes offline against AI). It is an i7 930 + ASUS P6X58D Premium MOBO, 6 GB RAM, 1200 watt PSU, water cooled, ATI Radeon HD 5870 w/1GB mem. Upon reboot I got the message that the OC failed, after a few failed attempts at AI Tweaker I flashed the MOBO BIOS to version 1501 and the rig was fine for another 3 months and started crashing during the same game again.

When stable for 15 months the OC was:

CPU Ratio Setting 21
Speedstep disabled
Xtreme Phase full power enabled
BLCK 200
PCIE Frequency 100
DRAM Frequency 1603 MHz

CPU voltage 1.35
CPU PLL voltage 1.80
QPI/DRAM Voltage 1.35
DRAM Bus voltage 1.64
Most other fields auto

Currently I cannot OC over 3.6 MHz. Tested each RAM stick individually with MemTest86+ for 3 passes no fail.

Any ideas?

UCLK Frequency 3208 MHz

Thanks Eebobb. I know there are two more recent BIOS updates on the ASUS website. I read what they correct and it did not seem to apply. Maybe I should just try the most recent. My PSU is only 1050w, not the 1200w I listed above (too much going on at work), but that should not matter.

I have not experienced electronic devices "slowing down" maybe an electric motor once just before it burnt up. Mostly electronic things work or don't not much in between. But i have much to learn about pc hardware and maybe they do degrade when pushed hard (like overclocking), but my water cooling has never allowed the temp to get much over 50C so I don't think prolonged heat caused these problems.

Maybe some more members will comment to my post.

did you get a BSOD? If so what was the code?
How come you cannot oc past 3.6Ghz? Anything above, and it starts crashing?

Your OC settings seem to be OK for 4.2... is that with HT on?

Like mentioned before, BSOD codes would help

Thanks VMarcari and Carlitos714. I'm so PO now I need to leave it alone. I checked and the BIOS I flashed is the most recent for my MOBO. I'll have to try again tomorrow night and write down any codes I see. It ususally never allows Windows to boot when I try for anything over 3.6 MHz, so no Blue screen of Death, plenty of Black screens of death though. I ran Prime95 tonight about 5 times with the 3.6 MHz oc and all workers stopped within 2 minutes, one right after another. I guess even this minor OC is unstable? I have no idea what is wrong, the system is not responding as expected for sure. I'll try some more things and post again in a day or two. If I keep playing with this tonight it might get a "flying lesson"!

I overlooked you using AI Tweaker and maybe you should use the BIOS only for your settings and see if that makes any difference.

I know you mentioned you tested your ram but, have you tried running with just one stick of ram and then trying to do prime 95?

Did you change anything at all? added a hard drive, fan or anything else? moved the computer?

anyhow, fill this out. It would help us trying to figure out your problem.
if you have any other additions add them accordingly and delete what does not pertain to you mobo. And you came to the right place. OCN is a great place with many members who are always willing to help out!

Hi Eebbob, I'm sorry for not being clear. I am using the BIOS, under the AI Tweaker menu and also advanced menu.

Carlitos714, I have not tried running Prime95 with one RAm stick. I could of course. I have not added any hardware. I did notice that my water cooling reservoir needs to be "topped" off a little more often. I have not seen any leaks, and it is such a tiny amount I had. The pump base has some slight rust on it, but if it is leaking there, it would drain out the bootom of the case and could not cause an electrical short. I can post my current BIOS setting tonight when I get home. Easier to cut/paste then type in.

Thanks again guys.
