[The Escapist/EUROGAMER] EA Germany: "Origin Is Not Spyware" - Page 6

Looking at the log:

Both the CreateFile and SetSecurityFile operations are privacy breaching actions as they tamper with the files. There is NO need to open a file with Create flags, nor should it change file access attributes.

There is NO reason for Origin to use those specific set of API calls on files it has no business with in the first place.

For a 'Walk', only QueryDirectory should be sufficient to find out about filenames in a folder.

EA has a hand of forcing stupid bloat/spyware on PC which started with Dragon Age 1 already: The updater for the game was a g.d. Windows Service instance which is ridiculous as updating/patching can be done from just a shell launcher as about every other game does it. But no. EA has to move that to a Windows Service instead with alleviated privileges.

At that time I stopped buying EA titles. and with Origin, EA is off my radar.

Those companies try to control more and more of your system. As if selling you a game isn't enough.

98uk this exact post was slapped down, hard, in the other thread so I'm wondering why you're necro'ing it. IRCC, Riou and GanjaSMK walked all over your reasoning last time with screenshots.

If you hook process monitor onto Origin you will not see Origin scanning anything, independently of how long you use it. So what triggered the OP's screenshot?

Origin on inst
allation will try to find games installed on your harddrive and automatically register them within Origin. It does that in a couple of different ways:
It reads the windows games registry
It looks for games in Program Files
It looks for games in ProgramData (where, for unknown reason the OP's SMS and tax software are storing the data instead of the user profile where that data should go!)
it reads the xfire config if it finds one for games

If you look at the screenshot closely you will see that it does not actually read any files. Instead it looks for their existence and recursively walks the directory. It does not read any of your files, at least not judging from this screenshot or anything I have found on my machine.

Lastly if you monitor the network traffic that Origin causes you will see that it does not transmit anything of value to EA. So far I have not seen anything bug login credentials being submitted.

But it's always so much more fun to assume that software is inherently evil. You can hook a syscall monitor on any application and you will see that it operates all over the drive. That's not something unique to Origin. Steam will do the same if you click the "add non steam game" button.

//EDIT: something I forgot: I think people should not run any sysinternals tools without a basic understanding of what they do or at least not jump to conclusions.
I don't have Origin installed, so forgive my ignorance, but I have to question what seems to be your massive amount of assumption.

Why would Origin need to scan my HD for 'games' in folders where games obviously aren't at? Better yet, why would Origin need to scan for games, period? How do you know what it's scanning for? Did EA tell you? If it was looking for 'games' to register within Origin, wouldn't it just look for EA game titles?!

You assume it doesn't read the files with nothing really to back you up. Why does it OPEN so many files if it doesn't read any of them?

You assume that EA isn't transmitting anything but why would they scan so much for no reason? Or could it be that you just simply didn't monitor net traffic when they sent the info?

Your assumption that Steam does the same was just slapped down, HARD, by Renton81 ( http://www.overclock.net/video-game-...l#post15540017 )

But why is it scanning into Skype and SecuROM? It should be looking into ProgramData, then ProgramData/Origin. It should not even touch any of the subdirectories other than ProgramData/Origin.

It's obviously looking for 'games'

This thread and any good info in it will be closed/deleted at the slightest hint of argument. One of the mods is a BF3/EA fan b/c like 9 of these Origin debates have been locked down for minor stuff.

Ask the fella who wrote it. But he seemingly has more proof of his idea than what you just said.

Simple answer to the whiners and whingers......

If you dont like what Origin does, dont install it

If you have installed it and dont like what it does, then thats your own fault for not reading the EULA isnt it.

No if's, no but's

He has more proof than screen shots from some of our best OCN forum members? I think not.

Sorry but there's a valid third option for those of us who would like to use said product but without Origin: Vocalize our displeasure

People asking for a game that doesn't have spyware isn't an outrageous request. LoL could you imagine how different history would be if everyone adopted your beta approach to life? We might not even have a US right now. Betas like you would say, "If you don't like the tax on your tea, don't drink it. Whiners."

Be real. EULA-type paperwork come with everything these days from software to toasters to checking accounts to cars. You might read details of a loan or a car purchase or a home purchase but how many sub $100 purchases do you read the full 20 page legalese agreements on?! Grown men and women barely have time to LIVE, so asking me to spend 1hr reading for every single purchase I make is ridiculous.

So what you're saying is you want to use the software, but only if its on your terms

Isn't that how it normally works for paying customers?

What is strange about wanting to play a game, that you paid $60 for, without having to install an intrusive program that violates your privacy?

This is unprecedented. Never before has a game required this. The game doesn't need this to run. And ****I'M**** the one that's being excessive with my request?

Dood, how do you think we got rid of garbage like securROM? It wasn't from being beta like you. Paying customers and potential customers have the right to vocalize their displeasure and if done right, it can change things. If we didn't, there would be hard data caps in the US, securROM would be in widespread use and major banks would be charging $5 fees for check card usage.
