Various Mods and DIY (Major DSL Warning) - Page 2

The pump is nearly inaudbile when selected to run at 60Hz (silent mode) in the software that comes with it. That lian li case rattles a bit and even with sound proofing transfers some vibration with the gel pad and zip ties. I has since been suspended in zip ties and the ties have gel between them and the holes the ties go through. It is really hard to tell if it's on when suspended.

I could raid my drives then use iSCSI, but like you said, gigabit can only do so much. Around 120MB/s is max I've seen which is most likely due to overhead holding back from 125 theoretical. I still use my C300 SSD for anything that I really care about speed, just nice to have tons of storage on tap with 0db sound from them.

My current project is involving power tools in which I'm not handy with at all, but managed to cut up my 3 year old or so P182 case. It now has room for my 240 rad in the front and I will be switching back to that case. Also bought acoustipack for it and think that will get rid of the lian li resonance traits since I KNOW my p182 was super solid. Those side panels are awesome on that case. Might have to make a thread and show off a bit of a work log soon. Got lots of parts coming tomorrow for it.

Very cool, I'd like to see how it goes for sure! I plan on getting an 800D this winter, with watercooling this HAF is kinda pointless.

Oh, so is there any lag from something like reading a movie off of your external storage as compared to your c300? I'd really like to know.

The 1TB I have mounted on iSCSI reads and writes WAY faster than the SMB mounted storage I have sitting on that same server box. It's an i5-2400 powered server with 4GB of ram and 6 different hard drives lol. 2 SMB drives and the iSCSI drive are all 3 WD blues. iSCSI feels like the drive is literally in my desktop. the SMB mounted drives will hit similar sequential performance, but tend to be kinda shaky on sustaining that speed and definitely are not as quick with smaller file sizes. Only reason they are SMB is I use those drive to stream movies to other devices like my Dune player.

If I remember when I get home I will try and run an hdd bench on the iSCSI mounted drive to give you an idea how it performs on a gigabit network. I have it passing through a router and 2 switches as well before it hits my computer. All CAT6 cable in-between. The server runs Server 2008 R2 and using Microsoft iSCSI software and W7 Pro 64bit on my computer using the built in iSCSI initiator. Think that requires Pro and not home premium, but not sure if that matters.

As side note I see you have the U3011 monitor. Do you hear it buzz? I have had SEVERAL ultrasharps and every...single...one I tried had CCFL hum (I'm that sensitive to sound lol). I now use LED backlit displays that aren't as good looking, but dead silent.

Good to know, I might look into doing something similar to you, I'll have to do some research first.

My u3011 has 0 hum, it's perfectly silent. And like you I am pretty sensitive to noise.

Sorry I didn't get to benching the drives the other night, but I got results for you.

First pic: This is the drive structure showing that the 1TB D: drive is appearing to be local although it is an iSCSI drive. Programs like Steam will not install on a network drive (but iSCSI masks that). I even tried using a symbolic link making it look local and steam still wouldnt install. Services run like crap on network drives. iSCSI fixed everything for me.

The reason the iSCSI drive shows to be 929 instead of 931 GB was because when I set up the iSCSI I didn't type in the correct size of the "virtual drive" setup in megabytes lol. Was kinda winging everything on setup as I was clueless the first time around.

Second pic: This is the iSCSI bench test

Third pic: This is the same hard drive model, but connected via SMB.

Now this is obviously a quick test with lots of bias as the iSCSI drive has a lot less stored on it than the network storage drive. Not sure if the results are too skewed because of that or not, but I can assure you that when I switched to iSCSI it just feels way faster almost to the point I forget it's a local drive.

Things to keep in mind. If you sleep your computer instead of turning it off or locking it when you go away for a while, the drive DISCONNECTS just like the SMB drives. It will stay connected if you only lock the machine though. This can cause issues with steam and services. My steam is usually just fine though. When you wake from sleep it takes 4-5 seconds before my iSCSI drive is back and then I get a "ZOMG UR D DRIVE IS BACK" wanting me to look at it lol. If you click steam in the toolbar before that happen, the service crashes. Wait 4-5 seconds first, and its fine. Overall, I consider it worth the minor issues to be 100% platterless in my desktop.

Thanks for the benchies Strobe, it looks pretty awesome. I would really like to do something like that, too bad I don't have the funds atm.

Oh, and putting those grommets in the wall was super easy. Just cut out the right size hole and glue in the grommets. smile.gif
