time for new card?

Thread Starter
Whats up guy's. I've been completely out of the game for almost two years and have no idea how my card is fairing now. Currently, I have a 4870x2 with one 22" display. What I'm trying to do is upgrade my comp and either 1. get 1 bigger display (24"+) or 2. run two displays. Problem is, I have no idea how my card fairs against the new products out there seeing as I am having a hard time getting charts with both my card and the newer cards out there. So my question is, what should I do? New card? overclock? I also plan on spending endless time on skyrim and would like it to run beautifully. Thanks.

sorry those specs aren't up to date at all, they can all be ignored pretty much. I currently run 6gb ddr3.

To be honest, the 4870X2 isn't that bad of a card. If you could find another one, then that would be a decent upgrade.

Also, you should really upgrade your specs so we can see what you have. Otherwise our recommendations won't mean anything.

What it really comes down to is what is your acceptable "basement" performance. If you need ULTRA-SUPER-MEGA high on everything, then it's time to go GTX590 SLI. But if you are OK with medium to high on most modern titles, then your GPU is really fine as is, especially if you aren't gaming above 1080p/1200p.

However, if you do want to go bigger in order to get higher resolution (like 1600p), then I'd think about upgrading.

I think that card should be fine for 1080 resolutions still...hell I'm just now needing to upgrade my 4850 for 1680x1050 just to play BF3, all other games played flawlessly still at 1680x1050 for the most part...and your card is the higher end model x2 haha. It all comes down to which games are you going to want to be playing. So that said, what games are you planning on playing?

Can't really find any benchmarks but apparently the 4870x2 is on par with the 5870. The 5870 is on par with the AMD 6950/GTX 560 ti. The 4870x2 does consume a crazy amount of power compared to them though and does lack features that the newer generation cards offer as a trade off.

Awesome thanks for the replies, really appreciate it. If it helps I'll mainly be playing BF3 and Skyrim.

for 200 you could get two gtx 460 1gb sli its as good as a gtx 580 if you overclock
but another 4870x2 would bring you up to quad fire
6970 is where it at or 590 if your living comfortable
