MSI 6970 Running Damn Hot!

Thread Starter
I have installed newest drivers for my components, windows updates and my MoBo BIOS firmware.
I have two 6+2 connectors in the GPU.
I have very good airflow and the cards intake and exhaust are not obstructed by anything.
When playing any game; Crysis Warhead, Battlefield 3, Aliens verse Predator the PSU whines like a little girl and the GPU's temp sits at 95-99 degrees Celsius. I was going to overclock this thing but am skeptical of whether it would live to next week.

Could it just be this piece of crepe PSU that will be gone next week anyway?

That gpu looks to be defective. A psu wouldn't effect gpu temps like that.

that's not right. my 6950 stays under 65C in full load with the fan at auto.
I would try taking it apart, and re-seating the heat sink first. If temps still peak that high then I would definitely rma.
my 6950 at just over 1000mhz core with max allowable voltage on the stock cooler...mid-bench-> wouldnt break 68c with the fans on 100%.. something is definitely wrong with that cooler mount.

I just replaced the TIM on an MSI 6970 Lightning ~30 minutes ago and my temps went down 12 degrees @ load. (That crap was gobbed on there bad!)

Ok my bad I was looking at GPU load. Sorry I bin working night shift and lost most of my cerebral functioning. The temps don't exceed 64C. Is it a recommended thing to change the thermal compound? I have some arctic silver 5 left over from my CPU.

Thanks guys.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but those temps still seem way to high even under full load, especially if you're only playing games for a few hours. My 5870 doesn't peak past 70c under full load for hours, even while playing BF3. I would still try re-seating the heat sink, sometimes the factory job is extremely sloppy and can lead to higher than normal temps.

I literally just replaced the tim on my msi 6850 power edition, and my temps dropped roughly 15-20c. Definitely replace the tim, but use some better paste like mx-4.
