Music Production PC Advice

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I need some advice on a build. I was speaking with a music producer and he's looking into getting a new computer for hardcore music production with the occasional video editing. He was going to get one of the Mac towers but didn't want to spend that much on the super high end one. He asked me what I could build for him.

I was thinking of doing an SR-2 board with max RAM and 2 Xeons. But is that overkill? Can Pro-Tools even use all of that power? Or would going with a 990x or 2600k be sufficient? He's on a dual-core iMac right now so anything will be a HUGE upgrade.

Any suggestions from anyone who has built a computer like or who has knowledge of these programs would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

No one has any experience with DAWs?

Or what about Sandy Bridge E? Maybe wait for that?

SR-2 builds are too expensive for the need here IMO... Would push the budget up close-ish to what it costs to buy a mac anyways.

I think any of the following CPUs would work great for this build: i5-2400, i5-2500, i5-2500K, i7-2600, i7-2600K, i7-2700K 1075T, 1090T, 1100T, FX-6100, FX-8120, or FX-8150. Honestly it doesn't matter much they will all do a great job for this. You can go either AMD or Intel here and the system will be impressive either way. The type of use you describe is where AMD has a fighting chance to compete with intel, because media related tasks can take advantage of all of AMDs cores in most cases.

I'm not sure if you intend to overclock the machine at all, though personally, I generally suggest against doing that on builds for other people. So any of the CPUs above are worth considering whether locked or unlocked variants.

Here's an idea:
CPU/MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.764354
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233197
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130679
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703025
HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145533
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811139008

Pick out an optical drive for it, and the basic tower part of the build ships for just over $1000. Then grab a pair of 1080P 21.5" monitors. Grab a pair of wall mounts so you can mount the 2 monitors on top eachother, if that makes sense. This will give you screen real estate similar to having one of the fancy big apple monitors at a fraction of the cost.

Just put together a 6 core X79 rig. Something like this:

- Asus P9X79 PRO
- 3930K
- 16GB RAM
- 550Ti or 560Ti (can be used for rendering acceleration with After Effects and Premiere)
- 256GB Crucial M4 or Samsung 840
- 2x2TB HDD 7200RPM (RAID 1)
- Maybe Corsair H100 for cooling
- Good PSU (http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...-supplies.html)

Wrap it all in a nice professional looking case and you're done. Oh and give it a nice little OC

Hey thanks! That looks fantastic!
I guess I just assumed that he would need as much power as possible. He was considering buying the top of the line Mac Tower so I figured he wanted to go all out, but it does seem kind of unnecessary.

The only thing I have a problem with is the card. He was talking about getting a two or three of those huge displays (30"+ I believe) so I was thinking about an AMD card for Eyefinity.

Also, do you think 16gb of RAM is enough? I read that some of those plug-ins can use quite a bit of RAM.
And I'm sure for the price difference, it's worth it to just go for a SB build over X58. Not too mention IB and what not.

i really don't think u need a 3930K.

I built a music production pc the other week and you only really need a 1090T X6 at the mast a 2600K i7.

16GB of RAM is good but i dount it will use more than 8GB but 16's nice to be safe.

Also if its for music production u need as quiet as possible gpu make sure u get 1 thats deadly quiet / water cooled or passive cooled.

rendering will use my cpu than gpu so you can downgrade to a passive cooled.

I would also reccommend a SSD as there silent. HDD will only spin when in use.

If its going to be recording as well as editing there needs to be as little noise as possible because if he is using a sensitive mic it will pic everything up.

This is something that I was worried about. Can Pro-Tools use all 6 cores or would it just be a waste? Money isn't really a factor to be honest. I quoted him 5k and he said it was completely doable.

The build I just put together will dominate any Mac tower.

You can run two 30inch displays off the 550Ti or 560Ti. If he wants 3 displays, then you'll need an AMD card, something like a 6870 will be plenty. However with AMD cards you won't be able to use the Adobe GPU acceleration technology for video editing.

I'd recommend he sticks with two 30 inch displays and get the 550Ti. You can always buy a second very cheap Nvidea card just to run the 3rd display off if he finds that he really needs 3 displays.

As for RAM, start with the 16GB, if he finds he needs more, then you can easily upgrade. The P9X79 PRO has 8 DIMM slots so plenty of room to upgrade.

X79 over X58.

If this guy is looking at 5k for a music/video production studio, why not go with a macbookpro 17 inch, a couple lacie firewire drives and the associated software?

2700-3000 for the macbook,

500 bucks for a good size firewire external drive

300-500 for a blackmagic video device that can import 1080i/p video and transcode it

Hmm... I really like this idea. I didn't know about the GPU acceleration.

So let's see:

3930k
P9X79 Pro
16GB of RAM
550 Ti + something later if needed
(PSU? 500w enough?)
A couple 2TB hdds
Random optical drive

What about a silent case? I've heard Lian-Li's are really good but I've never really looked into them.

If he could go with a Mac, he would. But he doesn't want to spend 2-3x what is needed. He's not expecting to upgrade for a while anyway so I want to get him something that will last for a looooong time.

Also, I'm sure the 550 Ti will be sufficient for video editing also? or would the 560 Ti be better?

yea but you are forgetting a few things for audio/video. Where is he importing the video? is it streaming, what about the audio? Does he need reference speakers and a mixing board? What about a studio Mic?
