If your going for a music build you will need plenty of ram for VST's What software / DAW does your friend use? and does he use any midi instruments?

for the GPU and 3 screens why not sli 2 gtx450, then best of both worlds, gpu acceleration and 3 screens, room for 4,
and a i7-2700k seems to be the way to go, if u can wait for SB-E then maybe a good option, but otherwise,
CPU i7-2600k
GPU: 2x 450 (nice after market cooler version )
motherboard : Z68-UD3 gigabyte
get a SSD for boot and core programs, M4 is highly recommend around this site,
and a few HHD's for raid,
nice case,
and a RS240 xspc water cooling kit, easy to use, dead quit
pretty case..
u didnt say it had to be fan less so i dont no why people are talking like that,
though i did see the thread for the silent audio editing work station, might be worth a read for u
but ur not speced for silent so go performance, and currently the i7-2600k/2700k holds that title,

He already has a full studio. All he needs is a new computer because his Mac is about to crap out on him and it's just not keeping up with what he wants to do.

The video... I'm not really sure. I'm assuming it's going to be for music videos or random things he does with his church.

So let's see:

3930k
P9X79 Pro
16GB of RAM
550 Ti + something later if needed
(PSU? 500w enough?)
A couple 2TB hdds
Random optical drive

What about a silent case? I've heard Lian-Li's are really good but I've never really looked into them.
Look in to Fractal Define R3, and Silverstone make some good ones too.

Video editing is CPU intensive, the GPU acceleration is just a little boost, There is not much difference between 550Ti and 560Ti for rendering applications, so might as well save a few buks and get the 550

I know he uses Pro-Tools and I think Logic, but I am not really sure what else. And yes, he uses midi instruments. And that board that was recommended (P9X79) had enough slots so that if he needed to upgrade, he could.

SLI GTS 450... excellent idea! Didn't think of that. I would like it to be as quiet as possible but I've never watercooled and I don't want him to have to worry about that. I was thinking maybe a Hyper 212+ with some low RPM fans. I should've mentioned the quiet in the OP.

if he really does want to just waste his money and its no option go for the sr-2 and put 2 * Xeon X5650

32GB RAM

GTX 560ti

120GB SSD

2 = 2TB HDD

Would probably come to around 3k with case and everything else

I've heard good things about the Fractal Define R3. I'll look into it.

And thanks for the heads up about video editing. I thought it relied on the gpu a bit more.

SLI is a waste of money. Video editing software that take advantage of GPU acceleration can't utelise SLI (it's made for gaming). You're better off getting a single 5 series card (550Ti), and if you want to run more than 2 monitors get something like a 8800.
