How do I know what Windows CD I need?

I have a spare Windows XP COA that I picked up at a garage sale on the side of a case. The number is X10-60264. It simply says "Windows XP Home Edition", with no mention of a SP. What install CD's will work with the product code on this COA?

none, you need the actual product key. but more than likely it was an OEM version of xp

This makes no sense. I am wondering what install CD I need to USE the product key on the COA sticker I have on the case. Going to do a fresh install on another computer.

No idea. It didn't come with a HDD. In the past, I've seen SP1 or SP2 on the COA sticker, but don't remember blank. I'm not sure if that just means it need a regular non-SP Home Edition disc or if a SP1 disc would work, or something else? Hard to say, hence my post here.

I was hoping I could figure out what product it belonged to based on the X code... is there any place to look up what version each X code relates to?

I looked and looked for you and I couldnt even narrow it down to a manufacturer. I'm quite stumped. I've used regular first edition XP on a dell before using the COA That said a different version with sp3. It was a clean install. I even searched Microsoft and dell. Both say Nothing beyond finding a forum post. On the less reputable sites it had a copy of a recover disk and said just XP home no sp.

take a pic of it and blur out the key so we can see. But if it says XP home on it. Then I'm pretty sure that any home disc will work. Keys arent service pack bound to my knowledge. That and you can still activate it, you just have to enter it in and call the number on screen. Just make sure you dont tell them what you told us. i.e if it has been installed on more than 1 computer, just say no. Not lying since to the beest of your knowledge it hasnt been.

So just get any home Disc install attempt activation, if activation fails just call the number and go through the process over the phone. I cant tell you how many times we did that in geeksquad.

Well, my main concern is that the install won't even finish. I've had installations in the past where, if the product key doesn't match the disc used it'll just quit the install, and you have a halfway-installed version of Windows sitting on your HDD. Trying to avoid that... haha. Especially since it'll be at someone else's house, so I can't just download another disc or something.

I'll aim for a regular retail, Home Edition full install disc and see what happens.
