6950 is giving me fits! Help!!

Yeah, I'm from the south..we probably talk different than you folks rolleyes.gif

Anyhow! I've recently acquired a 6950 2GB card, and Im having alllll kind of trouble. The biggest being, I cant get it to run smoothly while playing games - and even to an extent, everyday tasks.

To describe the issue, it seems like I'm playing with on-board video or with either no driver, or a really old one. In my games, (even as simple as Magicka or Overlord) you get a framerate lag - when you move across the ground, its just...choppy. Oblivion is much the same way, of course. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest 11.10 drivers, cleaned out old ones, checked to see if my card was secure in the case...etc. But theres no give!

The card is an MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III 2GB - so, it's supposedly a good card...but I cant seem to get it to run smoothly with just about anything I do! (You can even see screen cut-up when starting up and closing down Windows)

Can anyone give me any advice? Any help at all?

Signed,
An exhausted, yet eager game-player.

*Edit* The card is now a Sapphire DIRT 3 6950 2GB - with the same issue!

Have you checked the core clocks while in gaming and see if they are normal?

I would think somewhere I had - I just pulled out a 560 Ti to put in my girls PC, and everything I did with it was as smooth as butter. (Ive since deleted the 560's drivers, of course)

So I would hate to think that was my issue - but! I'll check.

Check your GPU clocks while in-game...your card may be stuck at 2-D clocks

Did you BUY NEW ?
have you messed with it ? or left it stock ?

The MSI 6950 TwinFrozrIII 2GB isn't supposedly a good card ... it IS a good card, so if yours is STOCK and you're still having such issues, you might have been one of the unlucky ones to get a BAD card and you might need to consider RMA'ing it rather than giving yourself needless headaches over it ? If you do there's a thread ask MSI Alex anything ,,, search it out, maybe he can help you, he's an MSI Rep.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, it's stock as can be - picked it up from frys a couple of days ago...still well within my return policy. I didnt want to think it could be bad...which is ironic, it's my very first AMD GPU experience (thats why I was chalking it up to ignorance, being a lifelong Nvidia guy) and it's kind of disappointing.

Ive been toying with the idea of just caving for the GTX 570, but everyone says the 6950 is roughly as good...and it's considerably cheaper.

Oye..you got the headache spot on.

I might have a fix, this happened to me after first installing my 6950, if you only install the drivers and NOT CCC it worked for me.

How would this look as a replacement for the MSI TwinFrozrIII?

Well I'd go back to frys and get it replaced with another TFIII 6950. It's a pretty good card.

Yeah, that's what I'm sitting on at the moment - I completely removed the whole CCC package and did the drivers alone, but to no avail. frown.gif
