My FPS runs at about the same after GPU upgrade

Thread Starter
Hey once again guys, I know i've been bombarding the forum with questions so bear with me.
Now yesterday I upgraded from my MSI NX8800 GT 512mb to a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB. The games I play have hardly seen a rise in FPS...which is weird because the GPU is properly installed. So I'm wondering whether I've been bottlenecked? I'm guessing its the ram, but I need you guys to clarify whether the RAM is the problem. So heres my rig: Asus Maximus Formula, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.4ghz, Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB and 2GB of RAM Corsair 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 Should I buy another 2GB? And would it be better to get 1600mhz or would that not be needed since the Mobo's FSB is 1066mhz? Read this somewhere...
Thanks in advance you geniuses!

If you would kindly set your Computers specifications in your signature it would greatly help us help you as well listing the primary games that you're playing.

If you need instructions on how to set your signature just ask.

what games are you playing? your memory likely is giving you some bottleneck, though I doubt it is the main reason. particularly if, as you say you saw NO increase in performance.

go ahead and get 2GB more of the same ram, or get 4gb of nicer ram. everyone should have at least 4gb.

however, we need more info to determine why you saw no increase in performance. the memory will not be the only reason.

Welcome to OCN! Can you please first add your system specs here?

@kevinyellow your Q6600 just doesnt have the power to fuel the hd6870.
Maybe if you OC to 3.3-3.6ghz you can get 80-90% Gpu Usage out of it.

Did you enabled vsync if so you will get capped at 60 fps... Other than that we need your specs .. A Q6600 is a great cpu I doubt it's the cause of your issue... Going from a 8800 Gt to that card you should notice a difference...

Very possibly this, but also nvidia drivers interfering with AMD drivers could be the culprit as well. Make sure you get rid of the nvidia drivers and have the latest drivers for the 6870.

1- Have you used FRAPS to compare FPS in games?
2- What games do you play? (if they are old games, may be 8800GT already had high FPS and therefore you couldn't notice the difference)
3- At what resolution you play?

I suggest you first download and install Furmark and use it to see if your 6870 working at %100 and monitor your CPU usage while Furmark is running (Btw Furmark will really heat up your GPU, watch out the temperatures and make your fan spin at high rpm!). If you can post a screenshot with Furmark running and also show CPU usage in windows performance monitor at the same time, I will try to help further.

What resolution are you playing at? If it's a lower resolution you will be CPU bound and that could explain the lack of increase in fps.

When I went from an 8800GT to a 4890 with an Athlon x2 2.4GHz I saw a huge increase, however I was at 1920x1080. So I do not think the CPU will be as big of an issue as stated.
