What the hell happened? - Page 7

The first FPS I played was Doom 1 on a 386DX that I built from part that a big office junked. I was 10 and raided the big dustbins outside, lol! I ended up with a 386DX, and a 386SX.

After Doom 1, I played Wolfenstein 3D, then Doom 2. Then I moved up RTS, and got hold of Dune 2, and Warcraft Orcs and Humans. I even got Warcraft 2 to run on the 386DX, by accident at first but then on pupose. One day I played Summer Olympics 96 or something, and straight after that loaded Warcraft 2, and it ran, which it normally didn't do. So I opened up the DIR with Olympics in it and ran each file and then Warcraft 2 until I found a file that used to let War 2 run, just by opening it first!

Not to go off topic, I grew up with what are now considered "Old School" games, and honestly, they where amazing. That's not to say that there are no modern day games that I've enjoyed. Oblivion for one is on a scale that was just not possible back then, and I enjoyed Half Life 1 a lot, much more than the 2nd one. F.E.A.R was awesome, but I've only ever played the first one!

I agree that everything in life is becoming easier. I just hope that PC's in general stay sort of "difficult" or "mysterious" to the average person. I know that's kind of selfish, but I think some things should be difficult just because they're supposed to be....

Just the older generation complaining as always

I mean, Quake doesn't even look fun to me. I never could really get into Arena shooters, yet all these older folk keep trying to tell me that it is the best thing ever.

Maybe you guys are too nostalgic for your own good

I was too busy playing Descent to have any interest in ANY other game for years (years!) until Homeworld came out. Quake 3 also piqued my interest, but I spent most of my years playing Descent I and II. And then 3. Lol. And lots of Total Annihilation.

I run my quake III out of a folder, have done for years, 1.31 are still alive and kicking.
I haven't played in years, since I switched to a 60Hz LCD (60Hz just doesn't cut it with Quake III Arena), but my cousins still play daily.

Everyone wants something small to stay small, and feel that people who change it rob them of the original meaning or integrity. It is an opinion I struggle to validate or invalidate personally.

Ultimately, anything special should be special to you regardless of what other people use it for. But in a real world, the availability of things that you enjoy are dictated by its popularity. I tend to have a deep appreciation for my hobbies and interests. I am all for exposing something virtuous to other people in the world. However, when that exposure results in the majority of people jumping on the bandwagon for reasons other than the core virtues I enjoy, it becomes more difficult for me to enjoy these things because their general quality is lessened via popularity. There becomes more of less.

I think that most people don't value things deeply, so to those who do have strong attachments to something, that thing gaining popularity is an inevitable encroachment by those who don't appreciate it as much. I just wish people would get into things for reasons that had discussable merit and have real passion for it.

I don't care if people share my interests, just share them instead of being an automaton.

I'm sorry but it's not. Quake, Quake II and Quake III Arena OWN it.

Sure Half Life was cool in that it brought a story but my god that's what RPG's are for. FPS should be about pure, fast, gib all you can adrenaline fueled ACTION.

Nothing will ever beat Quake
What about Goldeneye 007 for 64, mind you this was on a console. But lets be honest Goldeneye 007 you have to give it some credit.

Are you doing that to be "cool", or did you REALLY grow up playing Quake like some of us did?

I remember playing quake at 320x240 in software mode on my AMD K6 233Mhz chip with onboard graphics. That was back when that setup was BLEEDING EDGE with 64MB of RAM and Windows 98SE. Only thing I was missing was a GPU though.

Pretty sure I played it on a Pentium 1 before that, on Windows 95 even.
Psh 233's were weaksauce back in 98! 80523!!!

Never actually played quake back in the day, played a TON of doom/doom2/hexen/age of empires/warcraft2

Awesome video and SO true!

Why do devs feel we need our hands held by over-simplicity? Some of those tips were brilliant and illustrative of an element of dumbing-down which has been creeping up on us for a while now.

Tip: You can shoot enemies to kill them!
That pretty much sums it up...

I mean, most games nowadays (specially FPS) are made to sell, putting fancy graphics ahead of real, challenging gameplay. Most challenges I see on recent games are the implemented achievements, while actually beating the game has become more and more easy. Of course, not all games are like this, but it's a tendency for most of 'em, unfortunately.
