Case or cooler?

Thread Starter
I've been saving up for a while and I can now afford either a new case or CPU cooler. My CPU cooler struggled to keep my old P4 back in the day below 90 degrees but now surprisingly it's keeping this OC'd Q9550 at max 75 degrees. I don't really mind temps like that considering the Tj max is 100 degrees, but still, it's not very good for keeping the chip alive for years. It also dumps crap loads of heat into my case.

My case is really bad for ventilation and only has 2 120mm fans, 1 intake that blows over the hard drive cage front-bottom, and one below the PSU which is mounted at the top. My 460 tends to sit in a pool of its own hot air if I leave my case door closed, and my temps are significantly better if I leave my case open. I've also ghetto rigged an 80mm fan from an old power supply (which moves loads of air) on the 5 1/2 inch bays blowing towards the CPU, but it doesn't seem to do much.

TL;DR My CPU cooler is old and dumps crap loads of heat into my case, but keeps my Q9550 at max 75 degrees on the lowest fan RPM. It's noisy as hell. My case sucks for ventilation too and my 460 sits in a pocket of hot air.

So what should I go for? A new cooler, or a new case? In terms of coolers, they're limited here, especially considering my dad won't let my buy stuff online ._. but I can get a Coolermaster V8 right now for a decent price - is it worth it? Or should I rather try get a 212+?

As for cases I really like the CM690 cases and I think I can afford one at the moment.

What do?

i say 690 first then a CPU cooler

You've got a fine case - just upgrade with two high-flow 120mm fans; that'll make a huge difference versus the current silent units.

I say cpu cooler first for more oc'ing. just open the side panel for the airflow. (I have mine permanently opened ) just a temporary solution til you get a new case.

All right, so cooler first. In that case will the V8 serve me well? I want to keep it for future upgrades (keeping an eye on SB prices after Ivy drops).

I do leave my case open permanently these days but it's really bad for dust build up XD

In terms of fans, what should I look at? Any specific brands/models? I can try to look around and see what I can get but I'll probably only end up finding noisy coolermaster fans :/

Leave the case closed.

The V8 is fine, and will certainly give you a large drop in temperatures when compared to the stock unit (your current one doesn't do any better than OEM...):http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/cm_v8/4.htm

For the two 120mm case fans, just get the highest airflow you can (listed as CFM)

If you provide a link to whatever store you plan on shopping at, we can provide specific recommendations.

V8 is fine, although it's not the best choice considering its performance is not that far ahead compare to Hyper 212+/EVO. You should either consider 212, Silver Arrow, or D14.
