GTX 480 SC still shining?

Thread Starter
Hi OCN,

I'm in the process of doing some budget upgrades to my sig rig.

My plan is to build a custom water loop - and for that, getting a bigger case.
Also I want to upgrade my gfx card.

I've come across a 2nd hand eVGA GTX 480 SC 1,5GB with an EK acetal+nickel water block, for a (i think) very reasonable price.
(EVGA 015-P3-1482-AR)

The card is 1 year old and working properly (so he says ).

So my question is; is this card still banging? and is it worth the price?

The 2nd hand card is cheaper than both brand new 560 SC or 560 Ti

Mind that I'll be WC'ing the card, so I'll need a waterblock aswell for a new card.

What are your thought?
I'm under the impression that this particular card is hard to come by. True / false?

/NwP

That is a bomb card mate, especially on water cooling..

I have a GTX480 w/ reference cooling and it does 850/1025MHz (1075mV) on AIR and it's faster than a stock GTX580

On water a GTX480 goes even over 900MHz..

If you have a good 850W or a better PSU then you should be able to run a SLI GTX480 setup nicely (but SLI would be bottle-necked by Q9550)..

I have a Q9550 and GTX480 (both OC'd) and there's no bottleneck at all,even on such low resolution like 1280 x 1024..

Go for it..

CHEERS..

This will make a nice upgrade for you. I would jump on it, I love 480's. The heat and noise is way over exagerated.

@ KingT

Thanks for your input!

I can't beleave it so "easely" beats the 580. Thats cool

I've appointed to go pick it up tomorrow, and with a slight pricereduction aswell.

For starters, I'll be running it with one of my GT 9800s as PhysX proc.

Edit: Will my current PSU suffice for this, you say, power hog?
Thank you all for your inputs - appriciated!

It's only a minor MINOR percent behind a 580 clock for clock honestly. So yeah, its an absolutely solid card. If you're getting it cheaper than a 560Ti, WITH a waterblock on it....that's a steal. Do it.

Use the money saved and get off 775.

480 is still a very fast card. On water, they overclock well and are really nasty. Running 480s in sli is lightning fast.

Well your PSU may not be enough..

That PSU has 404W on a 12V+ rail..

Now an OC'd Q9550 pulls ~ 140W and a stock GTX480 pulls ~ 260W in games..

So it would be a very tight fit.. (running a Furmark would be out of the option as GTX480 pulls ~320W in that stress test)

I have a 620W CM Real Power (516W on 12V+ rail) so my PSU runs my OC'd system easily (in every stress test like Furmark,OCCT PSU test,OCCT GPU test,3DMark 11 etc)..

I would recommend you a quality PSU with at least 500W on a 12V+ rail..

CHEERS..
