Flash drive issue, programs run like

Thread Starter
I have games and programs on my flash drive, when I run them they seem to run like crap. I had all the programs and games on a different drive about 2 months ago and they ran great, normal speed.

The original drive was a 15$ drive from walmart: PNY Attache 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nc.-_-20178251

The new one is: ADATA 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211393

...any ideas? This is really a big issue, and I cant for the life of me figure out why its happening.

Problem: You're running games and programs off a flash drive.

Solution: Run an external HDD or SSD.

I realize that its not the best way to run them. BUT I know that they were running perfect on the 8GB PNY drive, now on this one, Which is supposed to be better, they all run like sh**t.

Thumbs drives vary greatly on sequential and random performance. Even though the size is the same, you can see something like 10 fold difference in random performance.

Run CrystalMark on both and you will see.

Different flash drives have different Read/Write speeds. I find it to be even worse with MicroSD/SD's because there are supposed to be classifications there like Class 2/4/6/10 but manufacturers cheat and only boost performance on the types of Read/Writes required by the specification. Meaning like Sequential Read/Write speeds might be 10mb/s but then random read/write speeds might be something insanely bad like 0.025mb/s.

Damn. DuckieHo beat me by seconds, and said it better.

Do you still have the original? If so, run HDTune across both. HDTune Pro would be best, as it has a RandomAccess test that reveals a lot about a flash drive's performance.

How do you fix it? Well... was the old one formatted to FAT32 or NTFS? Probably FAT32? You could try copying everything off and formatting it the same way.

Another possibility... if you go into the device manager and find the flashdrive there, you can change it to "Optimize for Performance" rather than quick removal. After doing so you must safely eject it before pulling it out. But it could boost the speed a bit.
