Nobody knows exactly when the new stuff coming out. You are jumping from 5000 series to 7000 series and will see a huge upgrade. 5000 series to a 6000 series not so much.
if you were to spend $500, i would get a GTX 580 its more powerful than 2x5870s.
why don't u just find a used 5870 for dirt cheap and stick it in for CF for the time being.
WRONG WRONG WRONG...
Stop spreading misinformation if YOU haven't tested it yourself.
I've run battlefield 3 on Dual 560 TIs @ 1ghz, Tri-Fire 6970s, 1 5870, and all combinations of each respective set as far as single, dual, trifire, etc.
The 5870 was JUST fine at 100% HIGH settings at 1080p with HIGH PostAA and no MSAA. It looked perfectly fine and actually not very much different than it looks with my tri-fire 6970s on Ultra w/4xMSAA + High PostAA.
Honestly the difference is so negligible in image quality, that I would NOT upgrade to ANYTHING if I had a 5870 right now. TSMC is done with the 28nm chips already and are already mass producing them. Wait it out so you don't kick yourself later on. When the 7xxx series hits and 1 6970 for $400 is blowing away or equaling 6990 performance or even CLOSE, and its going to suck hard to be left 'holding the bag' and unable to resell for anywhere close to the retail value you just paid.
The 5870 at those settings ran at a steady 60fps. I'd say 50-55 fps avg, with dips into the 40s during high action, but still VERY playable. The 5870 actually runs BETTER than a 6950 2GB in BF3, and pretty close to a 6970 when OC'd a little.
The image quality difference is so negligible, that if you're running 1080p and on a 60hz display... KEEP the 5870 by all means.
Thanks and Best of Luck
