BF3 Hyperthreading On/Off?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I just got my second GTX460 working (after a nightmare with a bad SLi bridge) so I can now push BF3 to Ultra getting 55-75 FPS no problem... thing is one of 2 things happens at this graphics setting:

1. Random FPS drop (down to 20-30) for about 5 or 6 seconds
2. The game doesn't 'feel' smooth, even though I'm averaging 65 FPS it just doesnt feel liquid, its kind of hard to explain.

Neither of these occur at High settings, I've tried enabling VSync and that didn't fix it either.

Anyway I heard that if I disable Hyperthreading on my i7 then these issues will be resolved, can anyone share some experience or expertise on disabling HT?

Thanks,
Acry

Only if you are experiencing problems.
I would try anyways though, it is extremely simple to disable it In the BIOS.
Also, were you experiencing green flickering lines.

Hey Citra thanks for the speedy reply; when running on just one of my GPU's I had experienced green flashes, I read somewhere that this was an issue with the 258.62 drivers though.

I've never seen a game run better with HT on versus off. BF3 is no exception. HT off = better game performance, better overclock ability and less heat.

I had major stuttering issues, disappeared after turning off HT. Definitely try it!

Ok CallsignVega, but will I run into any issues with having HT off? Will I be getting a lower performance multi-tasking, I usually have photoshop + dreamweaver open aswell as other taxing programs at one time.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm not too knowledgable about the nitty gritty stuff of a CPU, until recently I hadn't even heard of hyperthreading.

Why would you leave Photoshop and Dreamweaver on in the background while gaming? Those programs use a lot of resources.

"Hyper-threading is an Intel-proprietary technology used to improve parallelization of computations (doing multiple tasks at once) performed on PC microprocessors. For each processor core that is physically present, the operating system addresses two virtual processors, and shares the workload between them when possible. Hyper-threading requires not only that the operating system support multiple processors, but also that it be specifically optimized for HTT[1], and Intel recommends disabling HTT when using operating systems that have not been optimized for this chip feature."

Off because it seems to cause issues for many people.

Some RTS games can benefit from HT. They throw off multiple threads to process unit combat and AI.

I'm not too sure but I believe Photoshop + Dreamweaver are very multi-threaded? If so, HT would benefit them. Run something intensive and see if all 8 of your cores hit 90%+.

They use a lot of resources while processing. They just use up RAM and a few CPU cycles when idle in background.
Once again...
