Sorry that was confusing; I don't have them open while gaming, I just have a tendancy to have multiple programs open at once while working, so at any given time I might have Photoshop, Dreamweaver, 20 tabs on chrome, FTP clients... the list goes on.

"Hyper-threading is an Intel-proprietary technology used to improve parallelization of computations (doing multiple tasks at once) performed on PC microprocessors. For each processor core that is physically present, the operating system addresses two virtual processors, and shares the workload between them when possible. Hyper-threading requires not only that the operating system support multiple processors, but also that it be specifically optimized for HTT[1], and Intel recommends disabling HTT when using operating systems that have not been optimized for this chip feature."

Is the difference massively noticable though?

I would say no, you can always try with it off and see, takes seconds in the bios to turn it off.

Sorry about the offtopic, but the title gave me some memories:

I had stuttering with my gtx260, disabling HT didn't solve a thing.

In heavily multi-thread work like video editting, you can see a 10-30% performance benefit.
Once again...

Ok just to be clear I can't do any damage to my OS or hardware by disabling HT?

I'll be home in an hour to test it out otherwise smile.gif
You guys've been great!

so to make the point of the 2 opinions while gaming its typically better to have ht off
while using your Photoshop, Dreamweaver and such its better to have it on so if your not apposed to rebooting your system during work time reboot HT on playtime (gaming) reboot HT off.

I'm quite interested to hear the result of turning HT off and will probably try the same sometime today. With my 5850's, I get that green flicker everyone seems to be talking about, mostly in locations with a lot of shadows it seems. Also, certain maps just lock up for me when I play on them. I thought my i7 at 4.0ghz and CF 5850's would play just fine, and when they are getting >60 FPS quite steadily, you'd think it should be smooth..

Next test, HT = off.

Just got it up and running without HT, runs BEAUTIFULLY!

Also didn't notice a difference in performance using photoshop/dreamweaver

Thanks guys!
