CPU Degredation

Thread Starter
I have an i7-920 that's been in my rig since the week the 920's shipped, running 1.25v and 3.8GHz from the start until just recently. Started getting BSODs (again, after several years of perfect stability) - traced it to the CPU, dropped the multiplier to 18 for 3.6GHz and all is stable again.

Anyone else experience this? Seems to be fine now, but I'm wondering if this is just normal wear or if I'm looking at a failing CPU. Doesn't generally run past 65C or so under heavy usage. Do have hyper-threading enabled, maybe I'll kill that to give it a little break in its old age.

yea i'd assume it is just getting old. although i have a PC that's about 8 years old and it's still putting along.(never overclocked it though)

the OC could be the culprit though.

I have heard other people have issues with 920s wearing out. I don't think hyperthreading is causing the problem.

How did you ever determine stability? You run 12hr+ of Prime when you set up your overclock? My i7 950 has been the same 4ghz 1.250v since the day it came out and I beat the hell out of it at work 8hrs a day. Its running 100% load as I'm typing now. I render HQ pics that take about 15-20min each.

I wasn't trying to say I assumed hyper-threading to be the root cause, just that turning it off would significantly lower the amount of heat generated and voltage required for the cpu - which should take a bit of stress off it.

Originally, 48 hours of Prime95 and another 12 of LinX back-to-back. Worked fine afterwards for several years. Got my first BSOD since initial overclock testing a few weeks ago running a VM, then another playing a game. Ran Prime and it failed after about 20 mins.

Are you able to try the CPU on a different board? My CPUs even when overclocked always seem to outlive the motherboard they are used with. Not knocking the Rampage you have, but maybe it could be a part of the puzzle.

^ THIS

In my life experience with computers, a motherboard is FAR more likely to fail than a CPU. A CPU failing is almost always an error such as poor HSF seating, over volting, etc. CPUs tend to either work or not work, rarely somewhere in between.

Try another motherboard that you know is a good overclocker and maybe you can rule that out.

Yes, in my opinion the 1366 chips are not as tough as others due to the uncore/ memory part of the chip. I killed my 1st 950 within 2 weeks just doing air validations.
