Should I get this?

Firstly I'd just like to say that I am pretty noob about servers.

Well, I want to know if I should buy a server. I have one in mind off Ebay.

What would my server be?
  • File serve
  • Mail server
  • Or maybe even a game server (old games like BF: 1942)

The specs of the server are;

CPU: 4 x AMD Opteron 850 2.4Ghz - 1MB - 64-Bit

RAM: 16 GB (32 x 512 MB) PC-2100R ECC RAM

32 DIMM slots - 0 Unused

Hard Disk Controller: Integrated Smart Array 5i Plus Controller (Dual Channel, Ultra3) with 64 MB total memory on 5i Plus Memory Module

4 x 36.4GB U320 15K SCSI Hard Drives Installed

Graphics Card: Integrated 1280 x 1024, 16M color on PCI local bus, 8 MB of SDRAM video memory

Optical Drive: 24x IDE Universal Media Bay CD-ROM Drive

Disk Drive: 1.44 MB Diskette Drive

Network: Embedded NC7782 PCI-X Gigabit Server Adapter - Dual Port

2 x NC7170 Dual-Port Gigabit Ethernet Cards

Power: 2 x 870-Watt Hot Plug Redundant Power Supplies

Ports:-

Front:

2 x USB

Rear:

2 x USB
1 x Serial
2 x PS2 (Keyboard & Mouse)
1 x VGA (Video)
1 x ILO
2 x Network RJ-45

Physical information

Dimensions (W x D x H): 17.6 x 48.3 x 67.3 cm
Weight: Minimum configuration: 29.9 kg;

Do you guys think this is worth the £210 they are asking for? It'/s ex corporate and looks well maintained. The seller also has 13000 ratings.

I couldn't speak to it's worth but it seems quite over board to me for file/mail/game server. You could go on new egg right now and for the same money (or there abouts) get much newer parts they would easily handle those tasks.

The amount of RAM seems especially unnecessary. Is it going to be handling hundreds of users or something?

The disadvantage to something like this are the server-grade parts. Replacing the special ECC RAM or the HDD controller is going to be expensive if something goes wrong, as are the SCSI hard drives. Also, that thing is going to pull down a lot of power i'd guess.

I'd say determine your needs and buy something like a Core i7 (or i5, whatever) and use regular RAM and sata drives. My two cents anyway.

It's going to govern at max five users! I thought it might be overkill too, but then looking at the price I thought I wouldn't need to update it for ages..

What you say about upgrading the HD... couldn't I just use a regular Sata disk?

The specs only mention SCSI drives. It would be perfectly reasonable to assume there are sata ports on the motherboard but I think I would double check this before purchase

Also it occurred to me since the last post: is this shipping to you locally? because this thing will be heavy...might cost as much to ship as does to buy. Unless there's some kind of royal mail subsidy thing in good old UK...?

In my opinion... Not worth getting... The thing will sound like a jet engine when you turn it on, and from what I saw in a quick-check, the system isn't even USB2.0 compliant, so that makes it an ancient server.

Also, not even sure if the system BIOS would support you booting from it if it's that old, or if you can even find a DVD replacement for the CD-ROM drive. Might be a challenge to install anything recent.

Yeah, pass up.

It will use lots of power and those power supplies are noisy!

Server grade parts are not worth it.
