People state that it adds noise reduction to achieve the sRAW file, but is that noise-reduction an algorithm in addition to the binning? Because binning is a form of noise reduction.

Regardless, let's say we don't have a camera that can output sRAW, and we just choose a down-sampled resolution. It's not pixel-binning then?

There might be something in either Canon's or Nikon's respective SDKs, OR you may be able to send the MagicLantern FW guys a message -- they're pretty intimate with some aspects of the EOS firmware, maybe they would have an idea?

In that case, it's likely applying the same preliminary algorithm as RAW to sRAW, but then the JPEG engine of 'n' camera's processor applies a secondary algorithm to add saturation/contrast/NR/etc to the final output image. Realistically, every digital camera in existence relies on some kind of internal processing to manipulate raw sensor data.

On a whole, my initial stance on this is the same -- memory is cheap, buy more and shoot the largest filesize the camera allows. You're giving up resolution in sRAW or in Nikon's case, compressed RAW file formats, which may or may not be important depending on your print size or web-published image. Personally, I don't print anything smaller than 5x7, and even in the case of smaller prints, I prefer to choose my type of downsampling.

the only advantage with sRAW is that it allows for more shots before the buffer fills up.

Still a non-point, as most of the people needing several consecutive shots without blowing the buffer are likely shooting JPG anyway.

so true. i set my d700 on medium-size jpeg just so i can hear that mirror flip eight times a second for a good minute or so
