My Thinkpad T60 screen auto turns very dim

I did google and find out it should be the screen inverter problem. My T60 just starts to have this problem today, well yesterday I find out its light start to be not stable already with some shaking in the white area. Today suddenly it turns very dim but I can still see the desktop stuff is showing in the dim. I have ubuntu and xp install and it happens no matter in bios, windows xp, or ubuntu so it should be the hardware problem.

My warranty is gone so I can choose to find a shop to fix it, or buy a new monitor to connect to the laptop.

What do you guys think? Is this the screen inverter problem? What is the best way for me to solve this?

I dont remember off the top of my head if the thinkpads have inverters built into the screen. You'd have to pull up the service manual on the ibm/lenovo site (which is **** btw)

If you've never worked on that laptop before (complete disassembly) then I would take it to a shop. Thinkpads are usually crammed internally and are a ***** to work.

yes there is inverter and I am wondering if it is the problem. If I buy it online, just around $7 US dollars since I am near a labor intensive city, so I can just get one and change it if it is the problem.

I find out two hints:

1) The monitor is ok if I turn down the light level to around middle range.

2) When I turn the light level to maximum, the inverter area starts to have some electronic flow sound for like 20 seconds then the monitor would suddenly be very dim again and the sound gone. If I turn the light level back to around middle or lower while it has electronic flow sound, then the no more electronic flow sound and it works.

So I think inverter is the problem.
